Show Surprise by Apathy Dear Editor: I am very surprised with the lack of voter turnout at our recent primary election for Park City's Council and Mavoral positions. Less than 27 of Park City's 2,186 registered voters went to the polls and chose the candidates candi-dates who will represent all of us in the-final election on November 3. I have been wondering if this apparent lack of interest has any relation to issues revolving around retent development de-velopment in Park City, and the fact that two of our candidates who are very involved here in town also have a very strong presence in local real estate and development efforts. Some residents simply feel that to have Bill Coleman and Bob Wells both elected to our City Council that somehow we will lose our control of Park City's growth and development. The truth is that the only time we have any control (to lose) is after we take the time to get involved and learn the information necessary for forming opinions and providing provid-ing input to the City administration. Our present City administration admini-stration has done an exceptional except-ional job in working for our interests and supporting our continuing input in their handling of issues. They provide countless public meetings and hearings for the sole purpose of obtaining our input while we continue to ignore them. Attendance is so poor at these public input sessions, (and this is cmbarassing to admit) that it really looks like we have no input to offer. So, from this we can learn that we need I City Council representatives ' who will know what we want without our having to call them or go to meetings and tell them since we have better things to do with our time. (A vivid demonstration of this is clearly the voter turnout statistics from the primary election.) Bob Wells and Bill Coleman both know development and business; they own their own real estate and development firms and so far, they have been successful. They should be acknowledge for being willing to donate their time and professional expertise to our City's business. .If growth and development are the most ongoing and agonizing ago-nizing issues facing Park City, then why not vote in a couple of experts in the field? Bob Wells and Bill Coleman have both lived in Park City for the past ten years. They have always gone to work here rather than commuting out of town, and they've raised their families here. They truly are "locals". We h.tvc all the potential of becoming one of the largest ski areas in the world and our growth as a town is unavoidable. We need people peo-ple on our City Council who can see that in advance -- not after the fact, and capable people who can protect the most delicate aspects of our community. And. to really have all of the things we want from our community we need to speak up and responsibility represent repre-sent ourselves. We all need to go out and vote on November 3. After all, we have chosen the candidates w ho are seeking our votes. Sue Bishop |
