Show I Ten O'Glock Whistle I by David Fleisher The Election Aftermath....;. I have never been one to take politics too seriously, realizing it may prove to be dangerous to my. health. Of course, watching politicians scramble around in the political arena can at times be mildly entertaining, but to take it all seriously is a waste of time. I consider football far more significant in influencing the growth and development of our society; it is a sport, unlike politics, worth watching. The problem with politics is that it exists. Park City has just endured an election, sparked with controversy and even divisiveness. As one person put it to me, "It was old town versus new town." Local developers are probably excited about Tuesday's election results; however. Park City's "old-timers" are more than likely either crawling under their beds and screaming in vain, or packing their bags and saying, "Well, there goes the town." Of course, some of these older residents figure the town left ten or twenty years ago. I spoke with one long-time local resident Tuesday and asked her if she was going to vote and she replied bluntly, "You betcha! That's one thing they can't take away from me." Don't misunderstand me; I'm not a cynic. I'm concerned about Park City and I believe Park City will have the stamina to weather whatever turmoil that may exist in the future (actually, now that we're on the subject. Park City is experiencing a mild case of turmoil right now). And furthermore, I like many of the people here who are involved in politics; I just don't like the fact they're involved in politics. Does that make any sense? See, as far as I'm -concerned, I just as soon have members of the Atlanta Falcons football team serve on the city council, not only because they're football players who compete in that glorious sport, but also because they play for Atlanta, my favorite team. Therefore, doesn't it necessarily follow that in order to make me and maybe others completely happy and satisfied with bur elected officials, they should immediately , begin getting in shape and try out for Atlanta's team? If you don't like Atlanta, try Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, or Dallas they are respectable teams. As soon as I heard the election results, I didn't say, "There goes the town." No, I said, "There goes another politician." See, once a politician starts winning, it gets in his or her blood. So in that sense, those people who didn't win Tuesday should feel relieved. You made it! You don't have to be a politician for the next four years. You can lead normal lives. Maybe I'm being too harsh on politicians. I know they work hard, take out the garbage every day and help with the dishes after dinner, but I simply can't understand why they would want to subject themselves to such abuse. When most politicians say things, people think they're either lying, stupid or that they have devious ulterior motives. And when a politician decides to remain silent on any given issue, he or she is considered weak or ineffective. There are exceptions. There are those rare politicians who are extremely bright, always tell the truth and nothing but the truth no matter what the consequences are, and who never have any self-fulling ulterior motives. Unfortunately, these politicians never get elected to office. In the final analysis, I would recommend that we all take Tuesday's election results with a grain of salt. You can take it with a grain of pepper, too, for that matter. These are good people and they will do the best job they can fcr Park City. Even if you didn't vote for them, I would suggest supporting them. .for Park City's sake. And now, on to more important things. A final reminder: don't forget Friday's big football game between our own Park High Miners and the Beaver Beavers to be played in Nephi. This is a semifinal game of the state championship tournament, and the Miners need your support. See you there. As I walk up Main Street, I hear the Ten O'Clock Whistle. |
