J Burton R- R Utah This is not a report from Washington this time Rather itis it itis itis is a report from home I was fortunate enough to be able to spend ten days in the valleys of the Utah mountains over the Lincoln Day recess and It was a welcome respite from the Washington routine It was good to be home to see friends and family and to get the chance to discuss with Utah's some of I the problems that concern our state and nation I I DIDN'T GET to visit in all of the 22 counties that make up the first Congressional District District District Dis Dis- for which I am sorry I But all things considered I Idid Idid Idid did cover quite a bit of ground during the stay My activities included speaking engagements in the Uintah Basin Provo Pleasant Grove Davis County Logan and Ogden with visits In other areas and communities communities communities ties in between One full day was spent in Brigham City and Ogden in connection with activities of the Golden Spike Centennial Commission Com Com- mission The establishment of the m 13 member 13 em ember be r commission was provided by legislation passed by the Congress last year Its purpose of course is in the precise words of the authorizing authorising statute to develop and execute suitable plans for the celebration of the theone theone theone one hundredth anniversary of the completion on May 10 1869 of the first transcontinental tal railroad a across c r 0 s s the United States As we all know that completion the completion the driving of the Golden Spike took Spike took place at Promontory Box Elder County Utah WELL OUR Commission is isnow isnow isnow now busily In engaged develop developing ing and executing and come a year from this s May we hope to have a rousing celebration that will do justice to all of those who a hundred years ago planned and financed and sawed ties and laid rails and cut cuts and filled fills and whatever else was necessary to build a railroad clear across the whole country If someplace we can just find enough money to do so That's one of our problems Congress provided for the CommIssion Commission Commission Com Com- mission what but but what with a war on and the government facing diverse financial problems besides be- be sides the Members wouldn't allow for any money to run it on Hopefully funds will be se secured secured secured se- se cured through private sources and efforts are underway in inthis inthis inthis this regard IN PROVO I spoke to the Utah Valley Industrial Development Development Develop Develop- Development ment Association installation banquet I must say that I am certainly impressed with the vigor and enthusiasm of the Utah County people in their efforts to promote industrial growth in the area While in Provo I had the opportunity to cheer for the Brigham Young Cougars in their crucial basketball with the University University University Uni Uni- of New Mexico BYU lost the lost the first time on the home court in Western Athletic Conference competition in four years years and and I had to be there Lest I get blamed for the loss I w would 0 u I d remind Cougar partisans partisans partisans par par- that I was also present at Madison Square Garden when Brigham Young won the National National National Na Na- Invitational Tournament in 1966 IT WAS a great treat the following night in Ogden to see Weber State wallop the University University ver- ver sity of Idaho and take top spot in the Big Sky Conference My Weber State freshmen daughter daughter daugh daugh- ter Carol hosted me for that one I always root for our Utah teams against the state out-of-state enemy But it sure becomes sticky for us when two of our local teams play each other like when Utah State plays Utah All a guy can say then is ismay may may the best team win Several years ago Gov Mike DiSalle of Ohio made the mistake of saying nice things things' about Ohio States State's basketball team and nothing about the University University University Uni Uni- of Both were ranked nationally-ranked at the time Right there he lost next election I For a long long tithe time i have been led to believe by byJ I J Administration that vi victory just around the corner Nw ci tI suddenly with the Tet 1 nobody even talks about I we will win only if we t rj 1 The mood in Washington Is isa a aa a happy one right now now- now nowr r insofar as the war is conCE ed is it in Utah |
