Show j Kickers Overwhelm Tornados By Alexander T. Holmsen Craig Griffin had the finest day of his young career as he scored 3 goals in leading the Park City under 14 soccer team to an 8-1 triumph over the Tornados last Saturday at Mt. Jordan Jr. High. Steve Toly added a fourth first period goal to ice the game, and Shawn Glieden scored four second period goals as Goalkeeper Goalkeep-er Alex Holmsen made a number of fine saves to limit the Tornados to a single score. On Thursday, the C'est Bon sponsored team came up against the vastly improved Aces, whom they had beaten earlier in the season, and were forced to settle for a 2-2 tie after having held a one-goal lead almost to the end. Again it was Griffin and Glieden who combined for the Park City scores. Again, Steve Toly, probably the fastest forward in the league, was able to outrun the opposition fullbacks but was unable to convert. Outstanding fullback play was contributed by former Astro goalkeeper Mark Zaba, who has managed the position swith with increasing confidence each game. Center Halfback Stephen Holmsen, Holm-sen, temporarily shifted from his anchor position, played with a vengeance and negated a possible corner kick goal with a marvelous header for which he paid dearly with a smash across the face. Park City's record is now 3 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties with 4 games remaining. In order to gain a playoff spot, our fine young team must win two of the last four games against the likes of last year's champs, the Germania Eagles; the multi-time previous champs, the PioneerCavalry; the Pioneer Darts, whose officially protested victory against us has not yet been adjudicated; and the Rowdies who tied us after we dissipated a seemingly impregnable impreg-nable 3-0 lead. However, it will take more than wishful thinking to accomplish a victory against any of these skilled opponents, especially the present and former champions. It will take two full halves 80 minutes of all-out effort plus teamwork, as opposed to individual indivi-dual fancy footwork and desultory razzle-dazzle that inevitably fails , against class competition to win. |
