"It seems the Planning Commission is spending a great deal of time trying to interpret what's in the code now. and trying to justify; exceptions they've made in the past he said, "When what they should be doing is spending more time plan ning." u . As far as the ultimate role of the Planning .Commission is .concerned. Bishop feels it is to act in an advisory capacity to the City Council". "We. also .have the responsibility of ' Walt Bishop. 42 year old -partner in the Corner Store Restaurant, was appointed last week to serve a four year term on the eight member Park City Planning Commission. Commis-sion. In similar action Rusty Davidson was re-appointed to serve another four year term onthatbodv. Mr. Bishop succeeds Commissioner Com-missioner Merrill Sanchez who was thanked publically by Mayor Jack tireeh for his ' dedicated service to the - community over the past four years. The appointments were made c ring the April 17th meeting of the City Council. Councilmen had been advertising ad-vertising for apptf rants for the ' two posts for over a jnonth , since the terms of office expired earlier this year. The advertisements produced a field of six applicants from which Bishop , and Davidson were finally selected. Mr. Davidson, who had expressed an interest to Councilmen in being re-appointed to his post, said he was pleased at the appointment and looking for- : ward to serving the community commun-ity for another four years. Likewise, Mr. Bishop, who admits has had no formal planning experience, said he was happy about the Council's choice, adding that he is ready to meet jthe challenge of his new responsibility. : Bishop has' resided in Park City along with his wife Dixie and two children for two y years. He feels that his fifteen - years prior experience as a corporate executive qualifies him for the City.Planning post. years he acquired an affinity for committee wqrk which was often . rewarded by positive results. He adds that his ability to "get things accomp-plished" accomp-plished" hopefully will make ' his presence an asset to the Commission and Park City. Mr. Bishop told the Record he decided to apply for the post because he felt obligated after two years here, to devote some of his time to community service!' Weve had a great two years here said Bishop. 4and I just felt I owed something to the community. After considering involvement in other worthwile efforts, I decided the Planning Commission Com-mission was the place" I could jdo the most good," j Because Mr. Bishop has had no direct involvement in Park City's planning process, he reserved comment on the more specific local issues until he can become more informed with each aspect of each problem. The new planner does, however, feel that the most pressing task presently facing Commissioners is the update of the Park City Master Plan and Land Management Code. "Those documents hold . the future of Park City" he said, "They must be developed develop-ed so they set forth and encompass the long range goals of the City as well as provide clearcut guidelines for the development and building which is inevitable during the forthcoming years of growth." From what he has observed : of the operation of the Planning Commission, Walt Bishop, feels that discrepen- establishing coherant and rational guidelines under which the Planning Director and his staff can operate; and ' to formulate long range goals which insures Park City retains its quality lifestyle in years to come." . Bishop admits that the development of low to moderate moder-ate income housing is a top priority for the city but confesses he's too much of a "conservative" to favor the. city getting into the housing business itself. - It remains to be seen whether Mr. Bishop will emerge as a "conservative" force on the commission, a fierce liberal as someone in between.1 The Park City Planning Commission includes: Chairman Chair-man Burnis Watts, Roy Reynolds, Mike ' Vance, Bill Coleman, Kurt Nelson, Walt Bishop, Rusty Davidson and GregLawson. |
