Officer Allen has received enough points so far this year in previous contests to be number one in the state. Competing against 31 participants, partici-pants, Officer Allen finished higher at the meet than Jerry Usher who was ranked eighth in the world last year. The pistol shooting meet was held April 14 on Hendrikson Range in Parley's Canyon. Using a colt 45 semi-automatic, Al Allen competed in three separate shooting exercises which demand speed, power, and accuracy. The shooting exercises are basically tactical problems. In the first exercise or "problem," a target is placed three yards to the right of the shooter, another target six yards to the left, and another one 12 yards in front. Speed is the key factor as shooters attempt to shoot the targets. The second area of competition includes targets placed at different diffe-rent distances, ranging from three to 50 yards. And the third problem, which Officer Allen won, recreates a life situation that a police officer may encounter in his everyday work. After shooting at three targets Sharpshooter Al Allen spaced 12 yards apart, the competitor must run over a 6Vi foot wall and re-load while on the run, and then shoot two more targets on the other side of the wall. A 150 pound dummy is then dragged ten yards into a "safety zone." Officer Allen has won six certificates, two trophies, and many other prizes competing in pistol shooting. This weekend, he will attend the mid-west championship cham-pionship meet in Arkansas, sponsored by the International Practical Shooters Confederation. Allen also hopes to compete in the United States Championships in October in California. Last year, Al Allen finished fourth in the state in pistol shooting and has racked up four first place finishes in the past year. |
