Show whence it came? Or does it just flip over and alight facing the direction direc-tion it was headed? Answer, please. And where else can you meet such scientific challenge? Mac. THE BIG TROUBLE with me is that I'm stupid. Everybody else knows all about everything and I know absolutely nothingabout anything. any-thing. Taint easy to be this dumb. But I work at it. Even, sometimes, some-times, I U-y to learn something. some-thing. FOR INSTANCE: How does a fly alight on the ceiling? Everybody has seen thousands thou-sands of flies on the ceiling. But did you ever wonder how it go there? Just flew there, you say. Sure, but how did it get from full flight to a squatting position? Now this scientific problem prob-lem was presented here several sev-eral years ago. But it was never answered. And since we have several hundred new readers since then, I'm gonna try again. SURELY ALL the fly-boys know the answer. Probably everybody associated with aviation has seen a picture of a fly, in slow motion, transferring from full flight to a cozy cuddling with the ceiling. Suddenly I'm not kidding. I want to know. Would you believe that I wrote to the Science Department at Utah State University, asking the question, and they never answered? ans-wered? Surely somebody at Logan knows everything. Why, here on my desk is a 40-page, beautifully-printed slick-paper slick-paper magazine on, believe it or not: 'Galleta. Taxonomy, Ecology, and Management of Hilaria Jamesii on Western Rangelands." (I have learned from this that Galleta is a kind of grass. Also that the cost of this study and the printing would put several kids through college.) IF I DON'T HEAR from USU (which Iprobly will now) or from some of you readers, read-ers, I'm gonna get in touch with the CO. at Hill AFB. After all, I'm a taxpayer. You think this is far-fetched? Bet you never tried to figure out something so simple. All right. It will be simpler if you use one hand, flipping and waving. The fly is in mid-air. Does it suddenly go into a loop, stop at the top and alight facing the direction from |
