Show me week Teaching Tots To Turn (Ski Tips features bits of advice by Park City Resort and Park West instructors.) Park City Resort's Mardi Smith is a newly certified blue pin instructor who definitely has a whimsical , way with children. Mardi's last stop before coming to Park City was West Germany. Mardi demonstrates a series of techniques in teaching tots to turn, with the help of a miniature assistant, Julie. "Kids are really great to work with because they have no fear of falling, mainly because they don't have too far to fall. They're also relaxsd and aren't inhibited. "They learn quickly because they're great imitators which puts instructors on their best skiing behavior." These photos demonstrate one of .the procedures to show children how to turn. ' '' id' .... CSr . A STRAIGHT SNOW PLOW "We teach this technique to familiarize the child with some means of control and as a lead in to the snowplow turn which is shown in the next frame." STRAIGHT RUNNING "Here Julie and I are straight running which teaches her natural positioning in skiing and gets her used to moving along on the snow." AIRPLANE TURN "This teaches children chil-dren to shift their weight to one ski or the other for turning. We don't explain the "whys" of turning, we just show the children chil-dren that it works." |
