Show Mining Industry Makes Strong Gain Tariff Commission Urges Increase in T Tariff ami Limit on Metal Imports The United States Tariff Commission today made its I report to the President according to word received this morning from Senator Wallace F F. F Bennett The commission recommended escape clause action for the zinc lead-zinc industry The commission ruled unanimously that the lead zinc industry has been caused serious injury because of zinc lead zinc imports and recommended a tariff increase The commission split however on the amount of relief recommended Three R Republican publican members recommended the maximum possible relief under existing law and the three I Democrat members recommended smaller tariff increase I IThe The Republicans also recommended import quotas but the Democrats did not Said Senator Bennett The Commissions Commission's action is I extremely encouraging for the zinc lead mining industry It goes further than many in the industry had anticipated anticipated- especially in the quotas As a Republican I was gratified to note that Republican members recommended far more relief for mining than did the De Democrats The Republican recommendations for import quotas I which I had urged could be especially helpful to the industry in in- Senator Bennett cautioned that at th the recommendation must be approved by President Eisenhower However the administrations administration's approval last year of the tariff increase bill introduced by Senators Bennett and Watkins is a hopeful sign he said Current tariff on lead bearing ores is three fourths cent per pound on lead content The Democratic members suggested suggested suggested sug sug- raising it to 15 15 the Republicans to 18 Present tariff on zinc ores is 6 Cent cent per p pound UD The Republicans recommended the same degree of r raise e 18 as compared to 15 by the Democrats commission The recommended an import limit of short tons of lead per year and short tons of zinc per year |
