C and the period was one of great p prosperity for the Northern Kingdom Jeroboam II the strongest strongest strong strong- est of the Kings had captured Damascus and restored the larger limits of his country The chief of the people became wealthy and lived luxuriously but the lowly were downtrodden and I oppressed I Against the evils of the time Amos addressed himself and evidently evi evidently evi I dently a strong preacher he 1 I gained attention and then in no no j i uncertain terms condemned the I prevailing corruption Amaziah a priest of Bethel and a wretched I reported to the king I that Amos was as working up a revolution revo revo- i lution Then he he hemet met the prophet and advised him to return to his i own country But Amos was was not afraid of the priest who vho closed his eyes to the evils about him and i ithe the he he refused to depart and continued with his preaching The message of Amos wa was wa not altogether one of condemnation I He held out hope to the people if if they would repent and turn to God We have e evils of our own and we should be concerned to put them thorn I down Let each one in his own I place do what he can to remedy evil conditions around him I |
