Show r 1 4 i fl 4 0 Park P ark City Entertains Big Group of Clearfield Job Corps Workers A family picnic of some Thiokol Clearfield Job Corps Center employees were at the Park City Resort this past pasti i Saturday August 3 I Besides the usual picnic fare of chicken potato salad pickles pickles pickles pick pick- les etc meeting with friends community sing plus special entertainment p pro program r o g r ram a m the drawing for prizes which ranged from badminton sets to portable television television sets and fun games for children and adults the picnicker also was able to take the gondola ride mine tunnel ride to the underground museum museum museum mus mus- eum or and/or play golf There was was something for everyone r J I The picnickers are the personnel personnel per per- 0 involved in the Job Corps training program at the Clearfield Clearfield Clearfield Clear- Clear field Free port Center which is isone is tp one of the six urban centers in inthe inthe the United States Staff personnel personnel personnel person person- nel must include the s same a me number of people required to torun run a small city It is a self- self j 1 community X i I Most food services laundry 7 11 maintenance utilities fire protection protection pro pro- security instruction administration and student life functions are accomplished on the grounds Employees are chosen carefully carefully carefully care care- fully on the basis of training and experience as well as personal personal personal per per- bearing All staff members mem mem- j j bers hers must be representatives of the highest standards of social J I conduct since students are ex exy expected ex- ex y to emulate this standard 1 1 in their stay at the center V If They must necessarily j be above average in every way and of sound judgement and integrity The staff is is' well represented professionally and academically ly with BS B. D C. C Clearfield is a mens men's center administered by Thiokol Chemical Corporation Corpora Corpora- I tion whose progressive program program program pro pro- gram development is ba based ed on many years' years experience in the I field of vocational training On April 1 1966 Thiokol signed a contract with OEO and was directed to proceed with the establishment and operation of the Clearfield Center This Center trains qualified applicants in technical skills skills' needed by industry and bust bust- busi busi- ness The choice c h o 0 i ice c e of vocational training is generally made bythe by bythe bythe the applicant and his supporting support support- ing academic subjects are determined accordingly Academic classes are geared to the vocation and generally include mathematics science history and English Not all applicants are accepted accept accept- ed into the Job Corps however ever they are ate carefully carefully's s screened by OEO and many are eliminated for failing to meet established criteria L. L A background of need Generally the family of a corpsman makes less than a a year 2 No applicant will be ac accepted accepted accepted ac- ac who has physical handicaps handicaps handicaps handi handi- caps which would interfere with required activities 3 Applicants must have been en out of school for 3 months and must not have been gainfully employed TRAINING AND EDUCATION The Clearfield Center offers seven vocational choices or job clusters These are Automotive and small engine servicing maintenance and repair rep repair re- re p pair air Refrigeration heating ventilation and air conditioning Chemical platies cluster Food industry and processing Agriculture Agriculture Agriculture Agri Agri- culture Metals Medical The daily d ail y training schedule normally con consists s is t s of three hours of vocational training two hours of academic classes one hour of physical education one hour of group and one hour of work experience ACADEMIC In addition to the vocation vocation- al training four basic education courses of study are taught taught- math science the world of work and communication skills Developing proper student at attitudes attitudes attitudes at- at towards study studying ing and learning is a prime objective It is the aim of this Center to apply a broad teaching scope in t this his h i s residential situation which will enable a corps manto man mani i to develop confidence and Interest in interest interest In- In terest in that he is learning as well as to develop a skill in his vocational choice INSTITUTE In addition to the vocational training typical of all Job Corps training centers in the country the Clearfield Job corps Center offers a unique program called the Advanced Corpsmen In In- In This program is geared for forthe forthe forthe the top of the total male enrollees s in Job Corps Centers across the nation Institute has two main goals to prepare high potential corpsmen corpsmen corpsmen corps- corps men for staff positions in Job Corps and other related agencies and to offer extended opportunities s to corpsmen in educational a are areas r e a s and community community community com com- development programs To qualify an interested corpsman must be between 18 and 21 years old He must have been in Job Corps for three months and during t that hat time have displayed aptitude and willingness to profit from such sucha a program An applicant must also have obtained written recommendations from staff members and approval of the director of the Center where he is studying The Clearfield Center has complete facilities and highly skilled staff to conduct the In Institute Institute Institute In- In program pro gr a m. m First the th corpsmen spend 12 weeks in a human relations course where they learn to deal with everyday problems in this area This is followed by six to nine months of intensive training training training train train- ing in one of three vocational teaching areas toe e as teaching as assistant si stant counseling assistant or recreation recreation tion assistant the job the On-the- Job training is provided provided provided pro pro- vided in the local communities working with local schools re recreation recreation recreation re- re creation departments or Community Community Community Com Com- Action Programs Graduates of the program have been very successful in obtaining jobs in all parts of the country They are working for such organizations as the Big Brother Program in New NewYork NewYork NewYork York or as street workers helping young m me members e m b be e r s of street g gangs a an n g s in various b big i g cities i in into n t to o constructive work and play in their communities The Institute graduates work well with young men in these situations because not too long ago they were there themselves CORPSMEN PROFILE The average corpsman is 17 2 1 years of age was unemployed unemployed mem and looking for work finished the grade has been out of school 11 ll months has less than a grade reading level He comes from a family of six who live in crowded substandard substandard 1 dard housing and has parents who are either unemployed if living or hold unskilled jobs He is usually undernourished badly in need of dental care and has never been to a physician The average corpsman does not have hav the vocational or educational educational educational edu edu- training nor the social skills and physical p ph h Y s sic i c al a I stamina to compete in our society CORPSMEN RESPONSIBILITIES TIES Upon the recommendation of the Center Director corpsmen can be separated from the Center Cent Cent- er for cause such uch as failure to adjust to their new environment environment environment environ environ- ment academic or vocational inaptitude or for habitual mis mis- behavior Once separated they are returned at government ex expense expense expense ex- ex pense to their homes This is n not t a a rehabilitation I center for center for wayward youths The students in the Cle Clearfield Job Corps Center are not here because be because because be- be cause they are trouble-makers trouble or misfits Actually figures show less than 5 of the en enrollment enrollment enrollment en- en at this Center cause problems which require serious disciplinary action The young men he here re are ar are eager to learn a trade to become sufficient self-sufficient to gain respect jis as wage earners and taxpayers within the social structure of their country One of the proudest achieve achieve- ments of the Job Corps has been the a enlistment nl i s t m e nt of outside private groups industry labor unions church civic and social organizations me members m b e r s of communities communities- these and many more more are actively contributing toward the momentous job of preparing Job Corps youths for their future roles as productive citizens Charles J J.
