V Webb right owner of Park City V. V Valley ey Studio reminisce about their Boy Scout experiences in Honolulu Haw Haw- aw- aw ail Dr Ross was an electrician and Mr Webb was a boilermaker boilermaker boilermaker boiler- boiler maker at the naval shipyards in Pearl Harbor This was July 1941 Apparently the Navy Department Department Department Depart Depart- ment was not unaware of a apos- apos possible possible pos pos- sible emergency situation as they called for scout masters to to work on a special training program of boys of scouting age At that time Webb was a District Commissioner of ofa ofa a scouting program and Dr Ross was a scoutmaster They met and became involved with the special scout training pr pro pro- They were not sure the young boys were taking much interest in the program but on December December December Dec Dec- ember 7 1941 the scoutmasters found the special training paid off Boy Scouts were cited by the local and U. U S. S Governments and were given a special commendation commendation com- com l for their work in 7 71 f first aid running e errands rands and being generally useful in the daze of the shock when Pearl Harbor was bombed in the surI surprise surprise sur sur- I prise raid attack which brought Y 1 1 r S ou country into World War H. H Twenty-five Twenty years have passed since the two scoutmasters scoutmasters I have seen each other Webb f left the islands in July 1943 jf and for a few years the two friends kept in touch by letter correspondence Both remained active in Boy Scout work Webb went to work in the copper copper copper cop cop- per mines in 1 Arizona Dr Ross went to California In 1945 Mr Webb came to Midway Utah and in 1946 moved to Park rk City and opened his Valley Photo Studio It was during this time of moving around they lost track of each eath other On a special civil rights panel program being shown on Channel Channel Channel Chan Chan- nel 4 this past June Webb saw his old friend and called the station to try to find Dr Ross The program was taped but with the help of Dave Novelle Park Park- ite who is a sportscaster and cameraman for Webb found that Dr Ross was living in Salt Lake City This past July 1968 the two scoutmasters got t together gether and spent an evening catching up on the others other's activities since 1943 One coincidental was that e each a c h had had retired from active scouting this past Jannary January January Jan Jan- uary nary 1968 Dr Ross has been active in civil rights programs is the president of the Utah chapter of NAACP National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was recently appointed to the Salt Lake City special relations commission com com- human police mission has traveled throughout through through- out the world as a USA aUSA US U.S. A. A United Nations delegate and is actively concerned with the poverty pro pro- blem in Utah and the entire coun coun- try He believes eves in your ado a self program on all levels of the community with guidance from governmental agencies which will involve the persons living in the ghettos rather than the usual usual hand out hand program Re Reeducation education training training training train train- ing and doing will be more helpful helpful helpful help help- ful to the families who are trapped in the poverty pockets of our c cities i it t i e s throughout the nation Dr Ross told Webb that the successful programs being carried carried carried car car- ried out at the present time re receive receive receive re- re very little attention from the news media but whenever there is trouble the radio TV newspapers are there and the public receive the bad news not the g good n news ws Much is being accomplished but much more must be done to alleviate the desperate conditions conditions conditions condi condi- that cause the problems and apathy in the ghettos Neither Kendall Webb or Dr Palmer Ross ever thought of coming to Utah back in 1941 but both are here and have adopted the state as their home Time and miles have separated the two friends for many years Now they are within 25 miles making it possible to keep in close contact and renew their friendship |
