Cowans Gowans Salt Lake City last Sunday evening Mr Charles Charle Shields a long time resident of our community In la the early days and for the past thirtyfour thirtyfour thirty thirty- four years a prominent and highly esteemed es es- es esteemed teemed resident of Salt Lake City passed Into his final sleep alter after a long illness at the advanced age of 96 98 years Deceased came to Park City in 1875 and In la 1879 engaged In the mercantile business with his brother Mr John Shields and the firm of Shields Brothers was one of the leading business Institutions Institutions of Park City until when 1898 1898 when the greater part of the business section and presidential residential sections were destroyed by byI fire Mr Shields was married on April 15 III 1891 to Miss Frances Ada Geiger they making their home In our midst and for seven years were leaders In business Il social and fraternal affairs esteemed and beloved by all who knew them Mrs Shields died In Salt Lake City on November 19 9 1937 The following is taken from the Salt Lake Tribune of last Monday Active In Masonic affairs since 1874 Mr Shields had been grand tyler of the Utah grand lodge Free and Accepted i Masons for 27 years and tyler of Acacia lodge I No 17 since glace he helped organize lilt it in 1912 He also helped organize the Uintah lodge No 7 In Park City Mr Shields Joined the Masonic or organization organization organization or- or in Wyoming and had served also as sentinel at Lynds Lynd's chapter Order of Eastern Star for several years and as sentinel for the Radiant chapter Order of Eastern Star since Its organization He received his Scottish Rite degrees in Evanston Wyoming February 1883 and andin andIn andin in 1879 Joined the Wasatch lodge No 1 of Salt Lake City Deceased was Deceased was also a charter member of Uintah lodge F F. F A. A AM A.M. M M. being a past Master Master and and active In affairs until his transfer to his Salt Lake lodge Born in Altmore Ireland January 17 17 1846 1840 he was a son of Patrick and Bridget Campbell Shields Leaving Ireland In 1863 1803 he went to Australia and five years later moved to California Moving to Ophir Utah In 1870 Mr Shields went Into the mining business In 1875 he moved to Park City where I the he co continued in the mining business until 1879 Entering civic life In 1914 Mr Shields served as ballif of the Third district court for 16 years under four different I adl administrations after which he retired I from active life J JIn I j I In 1933 Mr Shields went by airplane railroad and steamship to Ireland to renew acquaintance with relatives after an n absence of 46 years He lIe was a veteran all air ir traveler with more than miles mUes to his credit The only survivor is his daughter Mrs Frances Gowans Funeral services were held at Masonic temple Salt Lake City last evening at 7 p. p m m. under the auspices of Acacia lodge odge F.
