S Bountiful Utah Being a gregarious Individual ual Mr Milligan has felt the need to serve and be with people since he was a very young lad One of his first jobs was working working working work work- ing as a clerk in a privately owned milk depot and ice cream parlor THE HE OWNER Mr Harris and his wife were excellent employers he said and took me under their wings giving me many opportunities to become fully acquainted with all phases of their operation When he was 16 years old he became manager of the afternoon afternoon afternoon after after- noon and evening crew This was his first introduction to our na nations nation's nations nation's na- na tion's system of free enter enter- prise HE CONTINUED working in inthis inthis inthis this capacity throughout high school and on week ends be between between between be- be tween quarters and vacations until college graduation During During During Dur Dur- ing these years he became I acutely aware of ot the problems of the Independent dairies created created created cre cre- by the pressure of the larger larg larg- er dairies and their constant at attempt attempt attempt at- at tempt to force the independent out of business r I T worked closely with the Harrises in solving many of the problems associated with the operation of an independent bus bus- iness I was then and still am thoroughly convinced that It is the small independent business businessman man and our system of free en enterprise enterprise enterprise en- en that has made this country the great place that it itis is today THE YEAR he was graduated from high school he obtained a full time job at Garfield S Smelt melt er This was his first exposure to organized zed labor the unions and to large companies where employees basically are treated as members or part of a group rather than being important as individuals Mr Milligan re re- re called Here I was shocked to find that the unions were not actually actual actual- ly representing the majority of the workers Though most of the workers were members of the union they were completely unaware un unaware un- un aware of the decisions being made In their behalf Most were l lr I I r lil J. J DON MILLIGAN MULLIGAN too disinterested to become Involved in involved involved In- In or to attend union meet meet- ings A A VERY small majority of the workers ever attended these meetings and many of those who did cUd were factions from the mi minority minority minority mi- mi groups Here too the worker felt that the company owed him a living and that whether the company made a profit or not was of no concern to him Take as much as you can and give as little as you can in re return return return re- re turn was the standard rule for formost formost most of oC the men there It was extremely refreshing to leave this job and get back to the dairy Primarily because of this early association I had always had the desire to be my own boss or to tobe tobe tobe be self employed THE TIIE SON OF Priscilla and andRay andRay andRay Ray A A. A Milligan Don was bornand bornand born bornand and reared In Salt Lake City He was graduated from South High School In 1946 and received his degree In wildlife management from the College of Forestry Utah State University After receiving his degree he worked for the Fisheries Division of the Idaho Fish and Game Depart Depart- ment He t traveled r a vel e d extensively throughout the panhandle area of Idaho and worked closel closely with sportsman groups which gave hi him opportunity to m meet et many people and make man many n new friends IN rn A SHORT time he returned to Utah and joined the Utah State Department of Fish and Game He was hired temporarily ily to work in the engineering department with the understanding understanding understanding under under- standing that he would be transferred trans trans- to game manage management ment be before before be- be fore the summer was over However the engineering de department department department de- de was reorganized and he was made the department head In charge of all engineering engineer engineer- ing construction and maintenance maintenance maintenance nance throughout the state His job entailed much travelIng traveling traveling travel- travel Ing Into all parts of the state for about five ve years and he observed firsthand state government In I action The constant travel and his young family didn't mix welland well welland welland and Don decided to seek other employment preferably with a small growing privately owned firm HE GAINED a position with the firm of Reeve and Maxwell as office manager of their Bountiful office He maintained maintained main main- this position for the few years until he and three other employees recognizing the opportunity and growth of the state purchased the mapping and surveying portion of the business and organized the present company of Great Basin Mapping and Surveying Inc with offices In Bountiful and Ogden Don says Here my dream of being self-employed self and helping to develop my community Is being realized SINCE BECOMING self em he has taken an active interest In both political and civic activities He has been a member of the Bountiful Ser- Ser toma club for the past five years being a member of the board of directors for the last four years and serving as vice president of the club Continuing In service to the community he has been a mem member ber of the South Davis Chamber of Commerce for the past four years serving as a member of the board of directors This year h he has the distinction of serving as president of the or or- or SOME OF THE most outstanding outstanding outstanding out out- standing men In our community are working with me Mr Milligan Mulligan Mil Mul- ligan commented for the ad advancement advancement advancement ad- ad and development of south Davis County Don and his wife Myrna moved to the south Davis area when they married In 1955 They re reside reside reside re- re side at W. W with their three children Susan 12 Donnie Donnie Don- Don nie 10 and Sheila 7 The fam- fam lly ily enjoys being act active ve In both church and civic affairs HE IS PRESENTLY serving In the elders' elders quorum presidency cy of the Orchard II ward They have always been great boosters for this area rea and because of this many of our friends now call Bountiful their home Mr Milligan made the following following follow tollow- ing remarks about business and the future Business prospects for the future could be very bright but I am extremely concerned concerned concerned con con- about the attitude of not only many of our young people but many of the people In our community today Rather than getting Involved In civic projects projects projects they feel If they are busy in church work someone else can take care of the civic and political problems facing their community WITH MORE and more being asked for and supplied by the government small businesses are feeling the squeeze Our whole system of free enterprise enterprise enter enter- I prise the Independent small business man the system which has made America the great country It Is today hangs In the balance and Is fighting for its very existence Whether It Is to H live ve or to be smothered out by government control depends upon each of us Lets Let's not ask the government to todo todo do our work for us but lets let's support each other and ly those businesses who are aiding aiding aid aid- ing In the growth and development development development develop develop- ment of our community Lets Let's put our money to work for us at home and watch the south Davis area grow |
