I I A A. D Hilton HUton or of Rt No 1 Sandy Just four days alter after embarking for tor foreign service In June 1942 the mem- mem members members bers ot of this unit started making history landing in the British Isles the first troops to set foot on English soil Months were spent building huge air air- airfields fields which based the first B to bomb Europe But bigger things were ahead Africa I Acting as n a secondary line of defense they landed near Oran on Day D-Day oc- oc occupying occupying n a nearby airfield three days later That field and scores o of others were molded by them during the follow follow- following following ing months ot of the Tunisian campaign TheIr performance earned them a Day D-Day entrance into Sicily where they demon demon- demonstrated demonstrated their efficiency by constructing an airfield on the beach in 18 hours The Italian campaign found them building fields again behind the in- in infantry infantry fantry as usual Five days alter after the Anzio beachhead was established one company ot of them landed It was almost as though their had been n a signal for the enemy for from that time on they shared in the horrors of con con- tinous bOmbardment that were to make Anzio a long remembered name With With- Within in 4 days despite continuous ground and air bombardment they constructed a strip and not even the Anzio Ex- Ex Express Express press deterred them from keeping It operational throughout the long monthS of enemy pressure As a reward for Anzio these men were allowed to join in the through break which took the Allies far north or Rome building many ot of the airfields still being used by Allied fighter planes Thirty months have seen casualties but these aviation engineers continue to build bases whIch spell defeat for tor Americas America's enemy S.
