given an evening of genuine entertainment mr jones directing the high school orchestra gave several selections of outstanding merit which went a long way toward starting the evening out with a receptive audience A somewhat embarrassing incident lor for the members of the orchestra occurred in the middle of the first act when the curtain was pulled tor for a moment to indicate a lapse of four hours hour 5 the orchestra members thinking it was the end of the first act went to their their seats ready to play a selection mr jones had just gotten them started when the lights went out and the curtain rolled back of course the orchestra stopped quickly but nevertheless mr jones was highly colored at the roots of his hair orchestra members believe that a sign should be put up to do the indicating I 1 instead of pulling the curtain for a lapse in time 1 I 1 glen sanger rendered two beautiful ico cornet m et solos between the first and second acts act s and anna levey and james awil liam executed a snappy buck dance between tween the second and third acts they rendered this so well that they were encored I 1 tor for two more numbers these numbers by the orchestra and i individuals though only created an atmosphere mo sphere to aid the presentation of the remarkably well rendered play it was a drama which should be remembered tor for a long time by all who witnessed it I 1 the story of the play can be briefly summarized by saying that it was the story etory of a once prosperous southern family who had become destitute and had leased their home to a rich northerner W when they could d get no servants tor for the lessee they decided to do the themselves the play ended by having the northerner fall in love loie with t his supposed cook who was really the daughter in the family now that Is a pleasant story but its real charm was given to it by the acting of the cast foster jones as a but likeable friend of the family showed exceptional talent he acted so well that it seemed almost as though his aversion to fibbing was real and not just part ot of the play isabel dabling was a very charming and pretty redheaded red headed beaded or should it be titian haired society girl who was very muc much 11 in love with ja jack ck green whose literary tendencies burst forth into lull full bloom as he be ranted against the intrusion ot of mabel cunningham into his supposedly closet in a strange kitchen mabel played the part of an irritating nosy would be rich mother a part which was well acted especially when we realize that mabel Is far from being that in real ie hie in her snooping around the kitchen sh she e had discovered jack green cloetta cloet td with ai a matronly proportioned black in mammy ammy although of course their being in the together was purely accidents accidental I 1 it was difficult to explain jack however made a brave attempt at it this black mammy was none other than kathryn haran who performed exceptionally tio nally well her part was excel exceptionally tio nally difficult of portrayal because we who live in the west cannot understand the place a negro mammy holds in the hearts of her employers to whom she Is almost a part ot of the family A southern audience would no doubt have appreciated her a acting ct ng more than we notwithstanding these difficulties she put many of us la in sympathy ym pathy with her harvey dabling seemed at first to be a bit of a romancer but when it came to t 0 dinner he seemed to forget all about romance and was considerably aggrieved when on one or two occasions he be was passed by on a couple of the courses one would almost think that he should be satisfied fi to be missed assed when such a ch charming waitress did the missing the children of the family whose house bouse was being leased all demonstrated dramatic skill in their parts may kidder the spoiled sister actually expressed a desire to iron mabel morely merely because she had to hook mabel up maybe we be so hasty in condemning I 1 may though because hooking up somebody may be a more difficult task than most 0 of f us imagine this desire of 0 mays was happily prevented by her being discharged tor for flippancy her brother tom sullivan was also not in love with his new job of shining shoes he was fired when he demanded the privilege of tweezing twe eking harveys nose his older brother though carl johnson was more careful in the dispatch of his bis duties and was accepted as a good servant until he tried to get his brother back into the house bouse in disguise carls carla deep well rounded voice was especially pleasing and carl shows great promise of becoming a good actor should he desire to follow this line then charlotte matheson and francis harrington as the leads were no doubt the outstanding characters in the play it Is said that the way to a mans heart Is through his stomach so perhaps charlotte had this idea to in mind when she cooked but whatever it was she certainly floored francis but then one can hardly believe that francis resented being floored by the florress flo oress both charlotte and francis had good stage presence and both seemed to have gotten into their parts thoroughly the high school will indeed have lost something w when hen these two graduate in the spring miss ballard the director Is to be congratulated upon the successful presentation sen give their speeches in the high school auditorium the public Is kindly invited to listen to these hese trial speeches it if they are interested the orators to represent the high school in the annual unknowns leaving the last impression the students are beginning to realize they must develop themselves mentally to conquer the struggle tor for knowledge and are taking steps accordingly mcknight 32 william shakespeare there Is nothing numerous hum erous or romantic about his play in tact fact it Is very harrowing and morbid but the seniors are being benefited by this play immensely socrates said past term was one of history for graduates in first year stenography nearly every week at some time or other they would id enter the stenography room only U to find perfectly clean pieces of paper everywhere some of these papers were nearly as clean when they were handed in as they were in the first place but the blessing of these showers ot of paper was the tact fact that they spared the graduates the ordeal ot of a term examination a fact which pleased them very much for they felt more willing to have their grades based on the average of these qu izes than run the risk ot of taking an examination so much for these future stenographers it if anyone has the idea that a bookkeepers position Is a snap with a good salary just let him read this and with a deep sigh give up his dreams
