Show henry fo A rd S tarts h industrial revival by CALLB JOHNSON it Is too soon to predict how the bustness business and industrial world will respond to henry fords declaration that he Is a bout about to risk everything he has in the a effort to put as many men as p possible 09 s ible back to useful work at once but un unless 1 e ss I 1 am wrong the effect of the starting up of tile the ford plant on a lull full time ma maximum al production basis Is likely to be the turning point in the industrial situation I 1 am not interested in advertising mr fords cars but I 1 am greatly interested in the man himself that Is partly because lie he has proved himself right in practically everything he be has undertaken and largely because he has quite a different conception of wealth than most rich men have we have nothing the public did not give us he said bald the other day and he be has said the same thing to me more than once I 1 asked him once why lie he bought 0 oun ui the oiiver stockholders in his bis company because stockholders demand dividends v vid ends he said they think the earnings of the company belong to them I 1 wanted to use them to put back into the business to improve the quality and reduce the price of cars the money we get a bove above the cost of making a car belongs to the people who paid it and I 1 can only give it back by making a better and cheaper car so I 1 was nas not a bit surprised when a few days ago he said N no 0 surplus exists tor for private benefit every surplus Is provided tor for future use the furuie Is here and we are going to do our utmost risk everything it if necessary sa ry to use this surplus which th the a pub lie through its dealings with us has provided to see it if we cannot make what the country needs most work jobs we are going to risk everything weve got to create useful work tor for just as many people as possible mr ford realizes that his own industries alone will not end the depression but he believes that if 11 he can operate to capacity or nearly so thousands of other industries will take heart and resume production and the depression will slowly disappear you know faith Is catching I 1 lie he says bays to set the ford motor company operating at capacity is a task so huge wide spread and complex that there are no words to convey its full meaning la in one phrase A glimpse at some angles may help first after more than two years depression with out of work in the united states alone how many prospective buyers ot of low priced cars are there in the world I 1 price terms volume of boarded money employment lor for the maj masses definite knowledge of these and many other unfathomable factors are essential to a correct ans answer er the best minds can 1 only speculate to get the retail price so low the masses can buy it raw materials and supplies I 1 going into a car must be bought at the lowest figure to get them at this figure they must be bought in tr tremendous volume so mammoth an anti inti intake of goods requires colossal production to consume such huge purchasing and pr production cid demand staggering sums mr fords schedules are elastic and capable of large expansion it if a strong market develops and men supposed to know say mr fords potential selling field was never before so great the volume of production will be increased to meet it based on an anticipated production of ears cars a year gross purchases of 0 raw materials and supplies will average more than a month during peak production in previous years purchases have exceeded a month on this basis mr ford will spend more than in detroit and michigan for raw materials manufactured supplies freight and labor in the rest of 1932 in the detroit district alone he will employ more than men at the standard minimum wage of 6 a a day and upward the average monthly payroll in the detroit district will run to more than 18 a month now it approximates to teed feed the ford plants with raw and manufactured materials and goods more than direct and indirect supplies scattered over the united states will am employ approximately men of these supplies about 1200 are in detroit and in michigan outside detroit to keep the plants going it Is eftim estimated there will be a freight movement nt of inbound and outbound cars with a freight mil bill paid directly toy byl mr ford to the railroads and shipping companies of the united states of more than suppliers shipping to mr ford will pay the railroad upward of more handling the railroad cars will require larger railroad working forces add to such items things like steel tires copper lead paint glass lumber and all the other items that go into the making of a motor car and it la Is easy to see that industry will be stimulated in literally thousands of plants scattered all over the world by the initiation ol of this new ford program A hundred thousand men put back to work in his own plants will mean at least that many more r given jobs elsewhere N mot 0 every industry can start up like that on one mans gayso boards of directors find and bankers have to be consulted before any chances are taken but nobody but henry ford has to tie be consulted in this case and I 1 believe he has given himself good advice |
