city saturday evening piloted by george rosevear who safely landed us at the elks club where we were received by salt lake clas s and tickets secured and pullman reservations made we then journeyed on to the anka pacific depot where a tull full pullman train trail awaited the elks and the union pact pa 1 l fic alc band from ogden that made up the jovial party that will go down in lc L I c history as one ot of its most memorable events the train was in motion at abou p m and soon thereafter we wera vets called to enjoy one of 0 those famous fk ei banquets prepared by that caterer BLO connoisseur ol of good things to eat cessere ot of rotisserie inn fame we arrived in las vegas at 8 a 96 ra sunday morning and were received ty 17 city and lodge officials and the american legion drum corps we marched dowil maln main street to the elks club where we were officially received by exalted ruler buler R W thomas and his officers we registered gist ered received an outline of the program and then used the time intervening before the parade to visit around the city olle one george looked over the post postoffice office another visited the meat markets rome investigated the banks sam the police department to learn some traffic Is laws bill and glen inspected impacted the atre department part ment and ed stayed with the club to learn the routine ot of the secre secretary work two p m we all gathered at the clark county courthouse where the tha parade was formed and headed by george washington on his white charger followed by the fifer drummer and flag bearer ot of the spirit ot of 76 ogden U P band floats american legion drum corps and elks from all over the land marched over the streets ot of the city ending tn in front ot of the elks club the queen ol of the day led the singing ot of the star spangled banner five p m found us all at the meadows a famous night club where we were served a wonderful banquet augmented by a group of professional entertainers six thirty p m back to the lodge room where the ritual was exemplified to forty five candidates with las vegas and salt lake officers in charge dance tor for elks and ladles ladies followed las vegas Is a substantially built city having wide streets and fine business blocks population which Is 13 raised to by transients who are looking tor for work on the dam and many others who just travel to be in a warmer climate in traveling up and down the streets we did not see a vacant buil building din 1 nor in any of the occupied buildings did we see a free soup kitchen monday in the morning the elks and guests gathered at the elks club where eighty cars and two big buses carried people to lookout t point on the colorado where the services commemorating mem orating the birthday of george washington was held the impressive Impress he ceremony was conducted by the officers of salt lake lodge no 85 and its exalted ruler harry joseph the fla flag was raised on a 65 foot pole set ln in a lis concrete project we looked out on oil a vast expanse of wasteland and into a natural basin tor for the impounded water which will rise to a hei height glit of feet at the dam bit 0 will flood the area tor for miles storing thirty and a halt half million acre teet feet of 0 water and will form an artificial lake half the size ot of lake superior and will have a shore chore ol of miles turning from observation point we took the 1 lower 0 w e r portal road to the river we dis e embarked m b a aked at the first aid hospital while ahil e our escorts drove the cars bade back to the s summit u and then down the road via Williams williamsville ville to the six companies mess ball above the upper portals ot of the diversion tunnels to await their passengers who walked from the lower to the upper portals we crossed the colorado river on the new truck bridge to the arizona side band and visited the lower portals on that side i I 1 and again crossed the river on a huspen 1 s ton slon bridge which Is all that the name implies about two teet feet wide and carrying airlines tor for tunnel work and ana affording quick passage from one side to the other for the employees various opinions as to the distance were from to teet feet but ed swears that he knows that it Is 2000 traveling upstream up stream on the nevada side we pass the concrete mixing machine the greatest in the world where a shovel will be as useful as a pitchfork in a snow bank grav gravel e I 1 1 in train loads will be dumped in specially special 1 y constructed bins and carried to the top of the plant on a large conveyor below and the cement win will be blown to the mixers from the floor of the plant and the mixture carried ried away in cars to the dam we stood on the exact spot where this gigantic bulk ol of concrete will reach leet feet skyward tills barricade will be a highway connection link aluk between nev ana ariz arizona 0 na and the highway on the nevada side ide ls Is already constructed to the canyon wall and Is being used as an observation point the next point of interest was the upper portals ot of the diversion tunnels here wo we saw a g giant lant steam shovel dipping down into the liver clearing away wreckage it caused by a lecent freshet Ire shet which filled these tunnels with sixteen feet of water two large coffer dams are being constructed in front of these tA tunnels Innes to avert a recurrence of high water to give an idea of these openings figures must be used we were told that the openings w will ill be efty fifty feet by twenty tet feet walled by t three feet on concrete drilling in the face of the tunnel Is handled on a ten i ton truck equipped with all the machinery necessary for a fun full round of holes the last part of our five mile launt jaunt was through the truck and railroad tunnel which will be used to transport material to the dam thence on to our waiting cars and then on to boulder city followed by a lunch at andeeson An deison brothers mess hall even here hurry seems to be the slogan two large dining rooms with kitchen between serve 1000 men to meals three times a day the city Is paved and all buildings are brick or concrete and has been built tor for a population of the six companies have their ow own city it chich house their employees it and nc 1 has a ins as population ot of after lunch we visited te d with government officials list listened to band concert then back to our cars car and las vegas to await the departure of f oar our train for home lookout point the site of the monument commemorating the tha birthday cf george washington father of his country is 1000 feet above the river directly over the dam and affords an e excellent view up and down the river this monument erected by the elks of the seven basin states reflects great honor bonor ort this fraternal order and to the th officers and members who carried the program forward to its fitting culmination on february 22 1932 to harry joseph exalted ruler of salt lake lodge no 85 must be given most of the credit as it was in his fertile brain that the idea was first conceived and through his in 1 bessant work of 0 lour four months duration closed another chapter in elk history on above mentioned date we predict that before the year ol of 1932 wanes this monument will be visited by elks from every state in the union in III the minds ot of the many men and women who were ere fortunate enough to make this trip to the hoover dam a memory of its grandeur will linger and we sug ug gest to those who contemplate a trip this summer that they visit hoover dam boulder city las vegas and especially the elks monument on lookout point side lights in our short stay in las vegas we were able to renew old friendships with former Par kites who still six companies are ten bomba ahead of schedule that the hoodei hoover dam and boulder city are government reserves and cannot be entered without permit that six companies have seven yeara tears to
