first in war first in peace and first in the hearts of his country men he was second to none in the humble and endearing scenes in private life pious just humane temperate and sincere uniform dignified and commanding his example was as edifying to all around aro und him as were the effects of that example lasting to his equals he was kind to his interiors inferiors condescending and to the dear object of his affections especially tender correct throughout vice shuddered I 1 in his presence and virtue always felt his I 1 fostering hand the purity of his private character gave effulgence to his public virtues his last scene comported with wit h the whole tenor of 0 his life although in extreme palo pain not a sigh not a groan escaped him and with undisturbed serenity he be closed his well spent life such was the man america has lost such was wag the man tor for whom our nation mourned methinks I 1 see his august image and hear falling from his venerable lips these deep sinking words cease sons of america lamenting our separation go on and confirm by your wisdom the fruits of our joint counsels joint efforts and common dangers reverence religion diffuse knowledge throughout your land patronize the arts and sciences let liberty and order be inseparable companions control party spirit the bane of tree free government observe good faith to and cultivate peace with all nations shut up every avenue of foreign influence contact rather than extend national connection rely on your self only be americans in thought and deed thus will you give immortality to the union which was the con constant object of my terr terrestrial estial labors thus will you preserve undisturbed to the latest posterity the felicity of a people to me most dear and thus will you supply it if my happiness Is now ought to you the only vacancy in the round of pure bliss heaven bertous be hearts that are great beat never loud they muffle their music when they come they hurry away from the thronging crowd with bended brows and lips halt half dumb and the world looks on and mutters proud but when the great hearts have passed away men gather in awe and kiss their shroud and in love they kneel around their clay hearts that are great are always lone they never will manifest their best their greatest greatness Is unknown earth knows little god the rest TO WOMAN by mrs airs harold hartwell in this mans paradise women are finally being taken seriously says mrs frank K tuttle or of new york chairman chair maz of the committee of women sent to the geneva disarmament conference by the federation of clubs of america with whom we are affiliated it was thrilling to hear her from across the atlantic women are well represented there this y year ear since about two hundred are in attendance it was also inspiring to hear mrs our own national president broadcasting the presidents message to those who were hoarding their money 1 her er appeal was to spend wisely and bring back good times again she said it was W as impossible to believe the extent to which hoarding was being carried money Is being burled buried in old mattresses and holes and a nd as it leaves circulation more people lose their work her appeal to the women m an was to be patriotic and begin a wise program ot of buying to women without whom one man has said men would grow a beard and carry a club the differences and resemblances between men and women have perhaps never been more accurately telY an and d ly set forth than in the splendid marriage hymn in Tenny sons poem the princess for woman Is not man but diverse could we make her as the man sweet love were sla slain in his dearest bond Is this not like to like but like in difference yet in the long years liker must they grow the man be more of woman she ot of roan man he gain in sweetness and in moral height nor lose the wrestling that throw the world she mental breadth nor tall fall in care nor lose the childlike in the larger mind
