sunday Y when dad and the party arrived t sate IS aul and whole at provo it was a deligh delightful tf 0 outing for the party ot of nine the only r rather other disagreeable feature being the ride nde on the return home from long beach to cedar city utah this drive taking nineteen hours because of a dense tog fog and slow driving from long beach to ont ontario calif california ania then fia an intensely hot day crossing the desert causing stops from overheated overheat over heat heated ed engine combined with tour four punctures and one bad blowout making delays necessary tor for tire was spent in sightseeing sight seeing in venice santa monica beverly hills hollywood alhambra and in and around los angeles including an hours stop at the attractive and unique olympic village I 1 ideally located on the baldwin hills near loos LOB angeles this la Is where the worlds athletes are located and it Is a sight well worth seeing on the way back to long beach a stop was made at the dymple flying fields and an airplane air plane ride taken by the entire party with the exception of mrs firmage who could not be persuaded to try it it was the first trip up in the cir jor or most of us baand and quite a thrill was waa experienced when up some feet and the panoramic view irom from that height was one never to be forgotten or gotten acroy pop debowe an air man of sixteen years experience Is in charge ol of the field and the many courtesies shown us by the gentleman was much appreciated coated he accompanied va us to another field a mild milb or so distant to see herbert spud 21 manning anning make a parachute land lag from a great height mr manning manning holds the worlds record tor for dropping more than leet feet irom from a great height before opening his chute Foster was asked to gl give ve a synopsis of hla his address on that occasion which he gladly consented to do the gentleman went to san francisco the following day as an a delegate to alons international convention and was kept so busy that he be tailed to mall mail the letter until too late lor for last weeks issue however it will provo prove as interesting and appreciated lust just as much by our readers this week the address follows mr rosters fosters talk mrs MM foster and I 1 were not able to be with you last year as we were on our way east at the time ot of the picnic we missed you but thought ol of you and hoped you would have a fine day and a happy time times like the present with so BO many people in distress and absolute need we are bound to ask ourselves to consider the things that are really worth while of two things I 1 am persuaded one Is that friendship Is worth more than gold and integrity better than temporal possessions men who tolled hard and honestly to earn and save a little for later years have found their little savings swept away by the manipulations of companies they trusted widows whose husbands husban or brothers left them a home and a small fortune havel have I 1 been persuaded by some sharper to invest and mortgage their h home ome for some scheme as heartless as it proved to be worthless but I 1 have seen many who have lost much carry their loss and disappointment with brave hearts because they still had friends to give them courage we have learned anew the value of a warm hand band clasp and the power of a smile and cheery word friends come closer when the road Is roughest and the memory of loved ones living or passed away cheers as much by memory of them as the contact with those still living many a man walking w the roads in search of work an and d content to lie down and sleep in any comer Is brave and enduring because of friends whose love and good word he would not forfeit tor for the greatest treasures of the world I 1 have wondered it if we ever stop to consider con hider how many men and women who are homeless and hungry hold most dear their character willing to lie he down hungry rather than sin bin against the conscience they learned to be guided by in days of prosperity the papers tell us of robberies and holdups by men out of work and hungry and some have fallen by the way side but I 1 marvel at the courage and the cheery faces and the kindly words of the many who come to our door with no complaint or grudge against those better off and I 1 cannot but feel that so long As america can produce such men and women children of pioneers who faced difficulties cuttles in their generation we will run through our present difficulties and our children be wiser and braver and more true to high and whole things than past generations ever had bad the power to attain to As I 1 look in the faces of 0 the little children here today and recognize the r strength th ot of character of 0 the parents X II 11 realize how muc much h we owe to the older friends here who telling in the rugged hills hilla in earlier days mined not only 8 silver liver but as the ore went through the mill to be refined so their toll produced in their children something very pre clous so that the men a and nd women hers here whose days are corning coming to a close may lie down to sleep with the satisfaction that they did not toll toil in vain but their childrens children shall stand in their places and carry on for god and country let us be true to the best that Is in us ind and the clouds will lift and the shadows had aws fly away and the stars in our hag flag be brighter for or the stripes of 0 our present chastisement THEO JOHNSON TELLS OF DOINGS AT MILITARY i TRAINING CAMP dear dad I 1 I 1 read the item in the carl johnson la is a corporal these four men man shot the automatic rules rifles and did very well but they are sort of sore because there Is no medal offered lor for shooting with this gun they said they got as much kick of shooting the auto rifle as a machine gun maybe they meant that I 1 it t was the gun that gave them the kick albert williams la is only a private but he shoots good he made a score of 83 which qualifies him for a rank of marksman bob also won marksman with a score of 81 jack hernon lust just missed M M by one point he got a score of 75 a and d he should have gotten 76 for marksman jack claims that they hold the target still while h he e was shooting lieutenant crawford says that we are allowed a ration ot of about twice as much ns as Is allowed the regular army we sure use it up from all I 1 eat I 1 would suppose that id gain twenty pounds in the month but this effect Is offset by all the hard work they give us we sweat off all 0 our ur excess weight in spite ot of the we are having a good time here and although we do want to come home borne a little I 1 believe we will teel feel a 11 bit sorry when camp Is over I 1 hope I 1 written too much lor for you to read
