record park city utah dear mr editor I 1 am not much given to writing to the papers but reading press dispatches concerning the B E P F and the veterans bonus song in last weeks record reminds me 0 of a story of a salesman he was a new man and met with remarkably successful results on his first day on the road later his efforts were not so successful and gradually his returns imbed to the vanishing point but always in his reports while bemoaning h his Is lack of 0 success he hoped his first days success would be a feather in his cap finally his employers wired him to make wings ot of his feathers and fly home the story applies in respect that the veterans seem tor ta make what they did in 1917 18 the basis tor for more and more preposterous demands on the government n I 1 am a veteran of four years service almost three of which were spent in prance rance and I 1 have any soft lob job IF either I 1 belonged to that branch of t the lie service e which even in ili modern days Is still considered the infantry 1 I took part in ten major battles two minor battles and innumerable I 1 raids the mud kind where ten or twelve men crawl cautiously over no mans land make a quick raid in the enemy trenches throw W a bomb or or two grab a prisoner or identification entill cation something as a means ot of Id and boat beat back its as quickly as possible belore before the enemy c can an locate the di disturbance esturb and concentrate a barrage of machino machine gun fire alre on the line of retreat our rest periods bere iere frequently barbed wire in no mans utilized to string land rebuild trenches si chattered altered by enemy to machino machine ammunition shell bell fire or carrying ive gun or trench mortar posts when a 11 been in a so called rest camp well directed long range shell iwi cwi has wace hit bit killing or wounding ai in london I 1 was driven to take shelter in the subway from air araldi I 1 do not mention these facts acts to boast but to support my contention that I 1 have little to learn arn srn about the horrors and hardships ol of war ITOM anybody not serve with the aracri true I 1 did that my wor work k forces but I 1 suggest cp cen n corces the make during these three years helped when task that much easier lor for the boys they came over I 1 have been la in this country thirteen years since the war and a citizen lor for save seven n ot of them during all ot of tile ane time I 1 have pala paid taxes many ot of them ind indirect direct but none the tha less teal real on that account now I 1 am married and have a family and am unemployed so tar far I 1 have inan managed to get along without sponging on oil the community and possibly I 1 can for a month or so BO more but atter after that what many young people have grown up married and hove have families and arc are caught in this mal moll estrom watch is sucking us 11 ll I 1 in what about them does daei despair sis P air res rest t more lightly on the shoulders ot of a non service man than an ex service roan man will a child teel feel the pangs ol of hunger any less because his or her daddy did not wear a uniform in 1917 18 we are being now on a cross ot of gratt graft it time to protect against more nails being driven into our shrinking flesh I 1 know of at least five people I 1 who have been an expense to the government in the way of vocational training and hospitalization whose disability was not tn in the remotest sense occasioned by their beIr service and in at least two cases so tar far as any benefit to the individual was concerned the money might as well have been poured into a sewer I 1 know ol of at least two who participated in the recent bonus payment whose only benefit was a drunken spree in gods god s name what did these men do in 1917 18 to give them preferred status over innocent children now it if there must bo be relief relict given and it seems as though there must before this thing is through with ith let the necessities of the present and not the actions of the past be tho the criterion by which ones needs shall be judged one thing more and I 1 have finished there is a job in this town which could be made available to a member of an all unemployed family true in order to make it available one of a family of two persons both of whom are working would have to be fired but as it would still leave one working that should not in filet any hardship strange to say this situation e exists under the supervision ot of a man mail wh who 0 Is in a position to know how acutely necessary it Is to spread work as much as possible but he Is either too indifferent or too callous to act there may be other similar situations why does not some of our civic C 1 v fraternal 1 r a and patriotic associations conduct c n d u a survey long along a these then lines arid and use what power and prestige they have to correct them yours very truly INFANTRY infantryman MAX park city utah june 27 1932 ac 1 if tin THE birst FOURTH or JULY
