Show president target of scandalmongers scandal bongers mongers by CALEB JOHNSON I 1 dont know whether the next president ol of the united states Is going to be a democrat or a republican but whoever he may be there Is one thing perfectly certain now he wont be a year in office before he will be sorry he ever got the job most men coming to the white house have fought their way up the political ladder and are accustomed to having their motives misrepresented and their personal characters besmirched by their enemies inside and out of their own parties personal slanders and lies not always set down in print but circulated by word of mouth are the fate of every man who goes into political life in america the higher a man climbs the political ladder the more vicious are the attacks by the time most politicians have got to the top or close to it they have become hardened and dont let personal slanders worry them put but even tie the most experienced politician ican once lie he gets in the white house giouse discovers disc oera that all that has ben said about him previously Is 13 bunday school talk compared with the underground rumors run ois and whispered lebeis which b aln to circulate as soon as he la Is comfortably settled in the white house that has been true of almost every president of the united sta states tea from the first alter after one term in washington wanted to quit so malicious and persistent were the falsehoods which his enemies circulated about him the most scurrilous attacks upon Lincol ns personal sona I 1 and private character did not come from the southern confederacy against which lie be was conducting a war ar but from his political enemies in the north the more vigorous the president and the more difficult the task before him the more persistent and vicent are these scandalous attempts to undermine public 0 confidence con fidance in him even that most mos t innocuous n of presidents rutherford E B hayes suffered so under the tongues of the scandal mongers bongers that he wrote in his diery to think that any man should seek office I 1 mr hoover had not been president a year before he wrote ills his famous calr hirt letter to an ohio friend 1 in which he complained bitterly ot of the malicious of his motives and hoped that he might be given strength to remain patient in the face of them alone among recent presidents mr coo aldge was neer the victim of the whispering sanders at least not to any ma trial extent the slanders danders about lis lia pu warren harding continued long after mr hardings death few presidents ever went into the white house who had such a strong and sincere religious devotion as woodrow wilson it Is doubtful doubt tul it if any man in public office ever lived up so closely to the highest moral code yet almost from the day of his first inauguration the tongues of slander began to circulate reports which represented mr wilson as a promiscuous libertine as a secret tool I 1 ot of the pope and as a man in whom personal ambition outweighed every consideration of public interest of course these slanders were without the slightest foundation in fact and they never reached a point where their responsible authors could be dragged into the light and prosecuted but millions mill I 1 ons of people believed and probably will continue forever to believe that mr wilson was a man of the lowest personal character i lter ir tafts geniality and inactivity protected him to a considerable degree from the slanderers slander ers but the tongues of malice vere turned upon mrs tatt taft belore before talt taft was roosevelt and there was as nothing mean or ignoble which was inot not attributed to him often in print most persistent of all the whispered slanders about roosevelt Hoo sevelt was wag the falsehood widely believed that he was a drunkard he tools took no notice of that until lafter I 1 I 1 alter tie lie had left the white house when he sued a newspaper which had printed 1 that charge and at enormous expense and trouble to himself made it clear to the world that he was one of the most temperate of men and that there was no possible ground tor for the charge of drunkenness i one of the easi easiest lest charges to make and the most difficult to disprove Is that a president Is using his office to favor his friends there have been few more high ann minded ded men in public life than william mckinley but he went to his deato smarting under the accusation that he had bad absurd his bis high office in the interests of big business there was no depth ot of personal infamy however degraded which was not attributed by the scand escand almon gers to grover cleveland that he was an utterly immortal drunkard was firmly believed by the type ol of people who are always ready to believe the about any man and who are never willing to credit anybody with having any higher principles than their own it Is this readiness of humanity to believe and repeat scandals that makes life miserable lor for men who are honestly trying to do their best and to live up to high Stane standards ards ol of personal c conduct on act As the presidential campaign approaches pro aches the slanderers slander ers are opening up 0 on n mr hoover more vigorously than ever unable to find anything in his personal character and conduct while in the white house or in the preceding nine years during which he was secretary of C commerce they are trying to dig up discreditable episodes in his lire life ab abroad road as a mining engineer in australia china burmah and russia it Is very easy to lie about what a man did many years ago on the other side of the world it may be possible to prove it but it Is also almost equally impossible to disprove it I 1 know of only one sound rule for the overage average uninformed person to follow in dealing with tales of personal misconduct on the part ot of presidents or candidates tor for the presidency that rule Is this would you believe that story it if it were told to you about a man whom you have known personally oll oil your lire ile and nd whose character Is known to everybody in your community men do not become president ot of th the c united states or candidates tor for the pre rA dency whose personal characters have hav e not been subject to the most intensive not only by their friends but by their enemies who ceaselessly look tor for flows in their armor when sour milk Is not at hand band w when hent cooking take a tablespoon of vine vinegar gar to a cup of water this la Is used the same as the sour
