Show BY RADFORD MOBLEY BUREAU special to the paik record washington D G C sept 2nd and the eyes ot of the entire country have been I 1 focused on the appointment ot of walter S gifford to head the presidents relief committee it Is generally that mr air hoover in taxing taking the step has returned to a field in which he Is ie conceded by everybody to be supreme that of relieving distress gifford Is the commander of five billions ot of capital and the employer of 0 hundreds ot of thousands ot of workers as head ot of the american telephone and telegraph company the mere size ot of any problem means nothing to him a valuable asset to a man faced with the prospect of 0 caring tor for an unemployed army of 0 between five and seven millions ot of people out ot of work his main task however will be to deal out direct aid or to draw upon the federal treasury tor for money to alleviate the sufferings ot of citizens but to ordinate coordinate co relief relict plans now being made by the multitude ot of cities and states president H hoover 0 over believes that every community Is able and willing to handle its own problem by raising a fund clent to care lor for its people out ot of work states will handle the destitute rural districts lie he believes and RU all that la Is left tor for the federal government to do Is to correlate all these activities so BO that all will bo be taken care ot of without draining the federal treasury comment in washington Is that the president has come close to solving the condition and the working out ot of the plan will be watched with absorbing interest mr gifford Is a man of deeds he has the real set ot of figures as to the number who can be expected to ask for aid along with the number of public that have been set on foot to furnish employment most ot of these figures have been obtained by the presidents committee on employment whose active head bead has been frederick C croxton the man who handled the che work under the direction of colonel arthur woods mr air croxton has been named chief assistant s to mr gifford he brings with him all the figures he be has lined up the last year and the new bureau will start fully armed with information that it aou would ld otherwise take months to get and assimilate it Is expected that immediate results will begin to appear and the criticism that mr hoover is doing nothing to avert distress will die down democrats here are making capital out ot of the recent letter to the president from governor roosevelt of new york who Is conceded the best chance ot of being the opposing candidate to mr air hoover in next years presidential race the letter carried a question asking it if the federal government was dealing directly with canada in regard to the st lawrence river power project As new york which Is the state most affected by the project t has been dealing with canada itself mr roosevelt naturally wanted to know what the national government was doing and if its work was conflicting with that of the new york experts instead of replying directly to governor roosevelt mr air hoover turned his letter over to under secretary of state castle who abe replied in an informal personal letter couched in a men manner ner saying that new yorks interests aou would id be carefully watched the governor thereupon gave his letter out to the papers letting the public ludge judge as to the merits of the controversy tue tee net result has been to make it appear that mr air hoover Is using the project as a po political foot football ball the one point he tried to avoid by handling the situation in an informal way v a Y the fault Is laid at the door ot of one ot of mr hoovers advisers but politicians cans here say it will not aid mr air hoover when he asks for votes from new yorks upstate farmers 10 all the entire country Is watching gov emor Roosevel ts other controversy the one with tammany the latter demands that the legislative inquiry now on loot foot uncovering Tamm anys political sla sins bli be enlarged to cover the entire state and particularly the upstate republican cities the tiger hoped to stall off action by the state legislature which has been called into an extra session with the aim of increasing the powers powers ot of the induisi tors it looks as it if the governors action would result in adding to the troubles of tammany and reprisals on mr air roosevelt are being expected by the politicians the governor Is gaining in prestige nationally by this controversy and ob |
