Show wonderful parent teachers meeting editor park record friend sam just got home V 0 adoth another er parent teachers meeting and thought I 1 should tell you something about it you should have seen that crowd down there packed to the doors an and d everybody smiling when they went in they knew this time it was going to be good goad and thrilled to their toe nails when they came out they ought to send all il the prizes in that band contest up here right away and save some expense going down after them the contest pieces played by the bund band were rendered in real style and I 1 am telling the world they were not chosen from any kinder garden book of music either air Mr jones ure sure has a way with him of drawing that music out the way he wants it it seemed as though the first part of the program was really intended for me the I 1 way those kids played the star spangled banner reminded me ol of the first time I 1 heard it that was in 1909 10 1 I was in the english service at that time in the marines and with the english atlantic meet fleet serving on board H M S albion at gibralter when the american fleet first sailed around the world awen ty tour four ships and two or three provision ers they steamed tour four abreast into the straits of gibralter and into the harbor what could get in some sight to watch those ships come over the horizon this sounds like a lot of history or bologna bolo gny and really what I 1 want to say is this that the english fleet had a massed band bana of four marine and one naval band playing the american national anthem as the fleet entered and it played better than it was this evening and then to top it off the kids played that sweetest ot of spanish serenades la got gol on andrina drina lna while they were playing that I 1 was taking a memory trip out of into spain I 1 had a very wonderful picture of myself and six other leather necks all in civilian clothes which we had rented on the rock crossing through the english gates breaking bounds yau you understand and then going over the neutral grounds and through the spanish gates with all the spanish music an and d eternal perfumes with ragged little urchins yelling me savy you marino because we give them all the they thought we should then the little spanish town and the big wine cellars and the jolly old keeper of one of them whose acquaintance we made who actually insisted that we sample all the wines in his cellar giving us each a mug as big as a bucket to do it with then out into the little town among the beautiful music and other things hombre that Is part of but not all the thrill I 1 got from la Gol andrina that the little ladles ladies sang tonight I 1 know sam what you are thinking that I 1 dwell so long on one time so be patient and I 1 will try to mend my ways john pike and glen did themselves proud tonight as always and the contest numbers by the girls club was the kind you read about but seldom hear the only thing bad about it was that all encores were barred on account of time so mr air jones stated but what Is little time everyone has lucre linore ot of that than money these days then there was the bunch from the B Y U at provo happiness the thrill of living and talent and sharing it with others seemed to be the object of those clever people and what a success they made of it to listen too and watch people ot or that kind makes me realize that we dont get enough of the good things of life we dont need to search far just use a little more though in choosing our pleasures those people from provo find pleasure in everything they do whether it is teaching a class or giving their services as they did tonight mr jacobs one of the members ii think that was his bis name told a story of I 1 a swede which reminded me of one on i the scotchman who bought a railroad ticket and then walked home to beat the railroad company well I 1 have an idea that I 1 have said enough for this time and will quit and go to bed with the rest of my memories I 1 am yours BILL WORTLEY park city utah april 29 1931 P S SO O one ne word about president john wyckoff I 1 have known him lit a good many years but never saw him smile very atten ten but sam he smiled tonight and anda I 1 he sure had good reason to john was well satisfied as to the success of this meeting W A W 1 |
