Show national affairs aff airs by FRANK P LITSCHERT there was something in the way in which president hoover called together tog th oer the head beads s 0 of f the various indus industrial trial e commercial and nd agricultural industries of the country which took us back in memory to the stirring days of the war when this same herbert hoover as head of the national food administration was organizing and directing the resources ot of the nation tor for the purpose of 0 assuring that our lood food supplies would not be lacking for our armies across the seas and for our nation itself this time the call was not tor for organization to win a war but to preserve the prosperity of the country which seemed tor for the time in danger ot of a check because of the disastrous slump in the stock market 0 0 O probably never in history has any notion nation survived so severe a stock liquidation as that which came upon us unexpectedly a lew few weeks ago without undergoing der going a panic and a series of subsequent financial disasters the way in which the country withstood the shock chock indicated that our economic fabric Is fundamentally sound our national leaders realized this and the purpose of president hoover in organizing for the restoration of normalcy was to prevent any widespread p read re recession e assion I 1 in business due to a psychological condition among the people themselves 0 that the te presidents initial efforts have been successful Is evidenced by the enthusiastic response from the business and labor world the response has gone even lurther further than this and the governors of the various states regardless ol of their political affiliations have assured the chief executive of their operation cooperation co in the constructive program which Is being outlined tho the president has naturally expressed some borne satisfaction over the results of his first erst efforts to in this program of restoring business confidence A number of things already have been accomplished the heads of the railroads who came to washington later conferring among themselves have announced a program of improvement and expansion 3 which means a great deal lor for the industries of the country in 1930 the industrial group reported to the president that business was generally good and that there would be no serious curtailment in the near future they promised that there would be no reduction in wages and the heads of the labor groups agreed that there would be no requests tor for general raises in wages until the situation has righted itself 0 0 O tho the administration itself has adopted a program which will help a great deal in making 1930 a prosperous year income taxes are to be reduced in the sum rum of 0 o 0 ocean mall mail carrying contracts will be awarded in the sum of thus aiding our shipping industry in a substantial way and this I 1 in n turn Is t the he construction of new ships for our merchant marine with a cost of apar approximately 0 a quarter of a billion dollars all of which of course will aid not only the shipbuilding industry but business in general again the administration will propose an increase of in the fund for the construction st of public buildings the government will of course aid in the tee financing of the new ships tor for the merchant marine mentioned above ap 10 n last but not least the president con berred with the agriculture group the farm leaders pledged him their support and gave him the encouraging information that the general farm situation in if much better than it was a year ago they approved the presidents plan tor for in creased road construction and suggested that agriculture could tie be bene fitted especially ally by the construction of farm to market highways connecting with through roads and thus cutting down the tanners farmers transportation cost 0 o W 4 taken all in all the presidents program seems comprehensive in a national sense as was to be expected ot of course 1 national operation cooperation co tron frota business lis 1 bor agriculture and the people it in ien beneral will be necessary to make it a corns plate success but there Is little doubt 3 that this will be forthcoming and it t 11 II be said bald in may passing that a sound round anil and 4 scientific protective tariff bill enacted I in the coming regular session 1 of 0 con SM gress will go a long way toward T izing conditions in america 1 l |
