Show license condemned says the eureka reporter some weeks ago the city council of eureka instructed city attorney C N leatherbury to draw up an ordinance changing the license tee fee on soft drink parlors to 50 per month it is quite evident that one reason for making this ordinance is so that a set sum will be coming into the city treasurer from these establishments instead of making arrests at regular intervals and thus collecting the money in fines I 1 this ordinance has not been passed as yet and there Is a likelihood that I 1 it will not be passed because the utah prohibition enforcement officials look upon ordinances din ances of this kind with disfavor the ordinance which was drawn up tor for eur eureka eka was taken from the ogden city ordinance which governs like establishments in that city and in view of the unfavorable publicity which the junctions junction i city has received it Is hardly probable 1 i that any other city in the state will go against the wishes of prohibition officers george A goates prohibition administrator for utah declared that while a ity city c may have the power to pass and enforce such an ordinance it has not that right and that his office can cooperate co operate only in one thing and that is an effort at absolute prohibition he further said that to regulate and control something that by the state and federal laws Is criminal is 1 a farce and a disgrace |
