Show national affairs written for the park record by FANK P LITSCHERT there Is no more important question before the american people today than that of immigration and no more or constructive tive bit af of legislation has been placed on our statute books in a long time than that embraced in our present immigration laws it Is now more important than ever before that these laws bo be enforced and that they be not weakened by subsequent legislation 0 0 0 0 0 for the first century or more of our existence the streams of immigration which flowed into america were beneficial they came at a time when there was a great I 1 demand tor for labor in the t he united states when more labor was necessary to develop tho the country than america itsell itself could produce these immigrants went into our cities and towns and out into the agricultural regions they raised their families hero here and became a parkland part ind parcel of america giving the best ahat that was in them tor for the up building of the country 0 e iut but now economic conditions have hav changed the country Is filling up labor L bor saving machinery makes a great influx of I 1 labor a bor from abroad unnecessary not only unnecessary y but dangerous I 1 from the economic standpoint had no immigration barriers been erected following the world war we would now have in the united states several million more workers than are here at present which would w have meant many jobless men in tho the united states for following the close ol of the war it seemed that nearly everyone in europe wanted to get to america 0 0 now ln in the united states we have a standard of living higher and better than that in europe it Is only natural therefore tor for european workers to want to come here and partake ot of our prosperity but if we are to maintain our standard ot of living and not sink to the european level it is necessary that we guard against a great influx of labor that is not needed in america at this time our immigration laws are not passed as a slap at any european nation and the aliens in the united states now should not so regard these statutes for a big influx of immigrants now would be as harmful to the aliens already here as to the native born americans the lowering of wage s standards tan dards and increase in unemployment I 1 would affect all alike nor would E europe u itself profit by the tearing do down of our immigration statutes an amer cal prostrate economically would injure not help a europe which needs our ank chai operation cooperation co it Is therefore necessary that ami cans keep the immigration issue well mind there ere certain politicians r presenting principal cities in which the til are large foreign groups who are advocat adaoo ing the modification of 0 these laws tl are doubtless influenced by c cert em groups of aliens in their respective c co aliens who cannot see that tt th would be injured rather than helped tr the letting down of the bars and th t influx of a tide of cheap labor but th t great bulk of the american people si i against the weakening of our minim tion laws and they will have to see to 1 that nothing of this kind Is b baroug rough about 0 4 4 4 0 not only must the immigration im la be maintained they must be enford with all the vigor possible an adain admin which was not in sympathy alt wl the law could easily defeat its purim by indirection it is an easy matter k change rules and regulations wilk might destroy the purpose of a low law t this kind it Is not to be assed assumed tt th anything of this kind Is B but u t it will 1 ill b be 1 a well lust just the same tor for th t vital im tt A american arisa people to realize the at C lava of our immigration period of our national existence f I 1 I 1 |
