OF THE DESERT rhyolite nevada once a humming mining town ot of substantial buildings I 1 with a pou lation or of ten thousand Is now a abandoned band boned another ghost town ot of the desert coyotes howl and chase jack rabbits through the streets ind and building shells of 0 the once prosperous city the pitiless sum bun shines down on a vast expanse of silence and solitude A schoolhouse a modern railway station and other buildings stand out as bleak mountains to the faith ot of the builders on august 9 1901 1904 frank shorty harris and E L cross were prospecting in a blowout ot of quartz and quartzite in southern nevada shorty struck a boulder with his pick and revealed the genuine green bullfrog rock tile the blow caused a gold stampede to the region in less than two deais a railway passed within a stones throw of 0 th tha spot when news of shortys Shor tys find filtered to the outs outside ideo world the rush began the gold eager crowd came from all directions down from the north they streamed meni men on toot foot burros freights light rigs mule teams and straggling horsemen all corning coming down from tonopah and the other fields in that vicinity concord stages brought passengers express and mall mail from las vegas hundred and twenty five miles south some came on toot foot with their beds canteens ana kruh grub bove strapp strapped ld upon their shoulders many never reached their I 1 destination others pushed on to fori fori I tune and tame fame the automobile at that time was coming into its own and the fortunate owners of cars blazed trails across the hot studs over which even wagons had not 1 hundreds of 0 white canvas tents dotted the desert and the catty i grew as if i by magic I 1 tile the men were herded into canvas lodging houses partitioned with burlap I 1 and cloth they were fed at lunch hinch counters and many stood in line lina for hours awaiting their turn water cost from 2 to 5 a barrel and was poor stuff at that price property vaults soared lumber and other building material were in lucli demand that three companies could not lot freight it in fast enough to keep up nith the building in 1906 the town appeared to be so well established that two railroads entered one the las vegas and tonopah To covering the miles to LasI las vegas legas on oil the southeast the other the bullfrog from the north corth with the advent of the railroads Rby rhyolite olite took on a more substantial lai aspect two large three story buildings of reinforced concrete were built and later a fine eight room school building with metal tile root roof the las vegas and tonopah built a substantial passenger station later its rails were taken tip lip the city had good railroad service three water systems supplied from springs electric lights and ana power two banks a tl ti ephone exchange with long distance service I 1 western union and postal telegraph three newspapers two churches a modern public school building an opera house and fifty seven even saloons but the bullfrog mining district did not fulfill expectations not one mine in the rhyolite district distri etwas was successful ces sf u 1 and a nd most of them were almost total losses the rich lead lynlch hichi harris uncovered was badly faulted and could not be picked up again I 1 the exodus became general then early in 1923 J D lorraine Lorr alne 92 years old died he was the towns last inhabitant dearborn Dear boril independent mining camps core come e and mining camps go but park city goes on and on producing forever concerning THE STAR OF UTAH editor park record I 1 promised to tell you something of the star of utah it is such a long story that to j tell the whole story would take api upi up at least two full pages ot or the park I 1 record i to ire begin at the beginning I 1 started in studying the geology of pars city twenty five years ago ard ad 1 early became convinced coD vinced that a great mineralized zone or dyke or fis j sure crossed through a portion or what is now the park utah property and liberty group and with a faw breaks brea kB or barren territory coni 1 tinned on southwest tor for over two miles and over into bonanza I 1 plat lat boanza following along some tew f hundred buil I 1 r yards south of the flagstaff and lucky bill hills later on I 1 read and studied dent bout wells report and the more I 1 studied the situation abe more firmly I 1 became convinced that the territory now as the producing part of the park utah ground together with the patented portion of 0 the star ground known as the tha star group and liberty group contained some great ore bodies I 1 wish also to say that the ground just u at south ot of the flagstaff Flag aud and lucky dill bill is in my opinion just ps as good a as any in the camp tile the only trouble with the flagstaff and lucky bill is that they are just a little too far in the hanging wall section as the great graat mineralized zone or dyke bf or fissure runs along at about the base ot of the lucky bill and flagstaff hills south colonel after spending some time prospecting the wabash ground came tor ter have about the same general ideas that I 1 have as his report written aritte 11 in 1908 just after lie he had struck a big rich ore body and got drowned out plainly shows it if the colonel had not been drowned out or it if he ae could have raised another hundred thousand dollars he would no doubt have drifted both northeast north east and southwest south west on the great ore body which he discovered cri vered andi and within two to five years he would naturally have acquired that portion of the park utah ground which is productive as well as other ground to the south and southwest southwest and extending along the base of the lucky bill and flagstaff hills hilli and opened up one of the greatest mines in the country ile he had the right idea as his report written eighteen years ago plainly shows however ha only got eberight the right idea after spending something over halt half a million dollars and after drifting over a mile south ot of the wabash shaft into the star ground which is now patented ground belonging to jas P burns it was iwas in this ground after following a kind of general north south fis fiss surel tor for several thousand feet i that lie found the ore ile he found the ore in the great grea northeast north east south west fissure or dyke or mineral I 1 1 iced zone which I 1 have just meni tinned but it was the small north south seam or fissure that led him so tar far south tar far to intercept the great mineralized zone which traverses the country tor for over two miles milea northeast north east southwest south west we have acquired about six then sand baad feet on this fissure or mineralized zone including some feet in the burns ground and we have acquired about feet along a feeder fissure or east west fissure which may prove to be of some economic importance andl and it may not the feeder fissure or small fissure running south about 70 degrees west has some ore in it and we will be in ore oft off and on tor for feet while driving toward the big fissure or mineralized dyke but I 1 dont think it will prove to be of 0 any great economic importance this feeder fissure fis sure or departing vein or ir east and west vein will lead us it if we WB continue to follow it into the big vein which runs about due northeast north morth east and southwest south west and when we reach the big vein vain with in t two or three years we are about continued on page three concerning the star of utah continued from page one as certain to open up a whale inhale of a 1131 mine n e as aa any future event can call be certain we have splendid equipment some real money big expectations and the promise ot of more money when needed and we are hitting the ball we are on oil our way and we know exactly where here we are going as we are driving 9 for a known ore body and while we may strike a whale ot of an ore body before me get to the big bie ob active jec tive as three prominent engineers have predicted yet I 1 ami discounting all the good go 0 luck which may happen on the way we have all the ground we want as we have feet or nearly feet stretching out through a mighty good country except tettat there are two small parcels 0 of ground which we will have to go through or across for just a few foai hundred feet fut ut we can go through this ground by condemning a right of way thru it it if we can not buy it tor for a reasonable price and it is ground of no particular economic importance outside of 0 this we have a continuous tract of land stretching out tor for over two and one halt miles and at least or teet feet of it is on one of 0 the greatest fissures or mineralized zones in the camp while we have all the land we want we have not got all the money we want mant we want five hundred thousand dollars to insure success and success with a big ESS but we vve have about three hundred thousand dollars in sight and a lot ot of people in park city and salt lake city mill I 1 think readily put HP the other as I 1 dont believe any open minded well informed man dian can turn this down it he is looking for a mighty good speculation we have not offered one share of 0 ito stock c k tor for sale in utah yet except that a heber matt man planked blanked plan ked down and said he wanted to be with wilb us but by and by when salt lake city and park city a and n all 0 of f utah get on a boom like flordia has bas just experienced we shall step forth some fine monday morning and laise jaise that othor and come toting it in saturday night unless as john D fisher and several other mining men have predicted we strike a nice pocket of ore in the little fissure worth about to but I 1 hope we dont find the pocket too soon as that would spoil all the fun and end the game too soon it is not the money I 1 cote caie a darn for but the game and it ie the game Is ended too soon the tun fun is all spoiler we incorporated tor for one and one halt half millon milion shares par value of shares one dollar each and we lave have considerably moie mcie tharl aliar a million shares in the treasury yet we have sold no shares tor for less than 76 75 cents a share and after about november 1st ast no moye more shares will be sold for less than a share the stock is all common nonas non as ses sable stock as I 1 dont believe in ill assessable block as assessing is 13 a lazy mans device the way to finance a mining |
