Show old scottish buildings something of ef mystery all over scotland are hundreds of forts built on hilltops hlll topa the alie white Cater thun in Forfar shire Is a good example of these it consists ot of four circles of stone the diameter of the inner circle being 80 paces the stones are 25 23 feet thick at the top and over feet thick at the base beyond the outer circle is a ditch with an earthen breastwork round it while beyond this again runs a double entrenchment the entrances to these various circles circle are zigzag zigzagged ged so that each remains covered by fortifications the fort at Da in aberdeen thare has five fire great stone cirdes circles all flawlessly built although there are no tool marks to show bow they were shaped I 1 these build buildings ings tire lire interesting but not puzzling but there are others i commonly known as plots burghs tt to which no use can be assigned A burgh Is a single tower round in shape wide at the bottom and narrowing towards the top from the outside outsider the outer walls of these towers shaped into circles have no openings opening of any sort except the entrance obviously sly then the buildings were never intended for forts inside the walls alls slope the reverse way and between the two are countless rooms often too small tor for people ever to have lived in them the largest of these mystery towers la Is that of dousay in the Ork |
