Show i two men MM WEVE GOT a real job ahead and well tackle it together thus informally and colloquially over the long distance telephone the let ilent elect addressed the ilic li vice irei dent elect thus also did thie the next president of the united states confirm for execution the first and one of the most note worthy of his campaign promises promis ps there I 1 is no discourtesy or ds disrespect respect in recognizing the way in which that promise when first made was regarded by some perhaps by many they wondered to what degree it was merely one of those glittering generalities which campaign orators candidates included have often been wont to utter it is gratifying far more than it ft should be surprising to find tho the president elect in his first after elec tion utterances reaffirming that first campaign pledge to make the vice president a real and effective member of his administration this we say should not be surprising because the president elect el eel Js precisely the sort of man of whom confirmation and faithful fulfillment of promises Is to be expected that was his reputation before he wa was nominated tor for the presidency sincere was the tribute which his rival and competitor could not help paying to him before he thought that the exigencies of a desperate campaign necessitated the substitution of scurrilous aspersions that reputation was daily strengthened all through the campaign the impression of sincerity was made deep upon those who visited him at his home it was made deep upon the hundreds of thousands who came into contact with him or saw him during his brief tours it was made deep in a the minds of those who heard him or read his addresses the very conservatism and caution of speech tor for which captious critics affected to censure him in tact fact confirmed that impression into conviction it indicated that this was a man so scrupulously intent upon fulfilling his hia promises that he would make none recklessly rec kessly or lightly but only after earnest conniel conviction alon ot of their rightness and of his ability to perform thiern thiem i it would be superfluous to enlarge upon the extent to which this Is true and was realized to be true of the vice president elect A younger man in years than his colleague lie he was much older in public service and was perhaps tor for that reason better known to the nation at large we should doubt if there was an intelligent man in the united states who questioned his sincerity or his single hearted devotion to the public welfare we C cannot bunot say that that impression of him m was deepened during the campaign because it was already as deep as a it could be but at least not one word or act of his in even tho the slightest degree impaired the vitality and persuasive power of that impression his widespread and manifold public activities in the campaign served to acquaint the nation widely by personal contact with the man who had lit hitherto herto been known more by i reputation uta tion a process which C caused the LUL nation to realize that the best which common fame had said of him had bad in no wise been oversold now such men are 0 tle the kind which this nation desires for or its leaders or tor for its public servants as you will it does not desire su save eave as they may demonstrate that quality after they have entered its ita aco and when a rare occasion cio comes tor for the objective demonstration of it caution and circumspection in making promises and fidelity in fulfilling them are what it desires in those whom it would trust in great things and they are what it unerringly disc discerned lerned in these two men it is thus difficult to overestimate the value of 0 its two candidates to the republican party as assets in the campaign and as factors making tor for bictory at the polls there were vere perhaps I 1 alever two men candidates for such offices who practised practiced less the arts of the spellbinder spell binder and the vote getter cettei there were seldom it if ever two on the same game ticket who more markedly mar gedly through the sheer force of ine personality commended them selves to the nationwide electorate never before in our history his tory would it have been mope mom appropriate andi and I 1 more auspicious of good tor for the president to make and to tull full till fill such 1 design as mr harding has expressed concerning his colleague than at the present time for seven years the nation has been made to feel most painfully the need ot of a liaison officer between the executive and the legislature for such service mr coolidge is admirably adapted in n his long and distinguished career in n public life he has filled both executive and legislative places with distinguished success and he has the temperament needed for intimate and appreciative sympathy with both recent occurrences have moreover caused an unnatural and detrimental amounting on one side to actual antagonism between the two coordinate departments of government that evil I 1 condition would doubt doubtless lem in any I 1 case be abated under the coming administration but it 11 will be all the better tor for it to be not merely abated but also replace with those actively cordial cordia and confident relations of intelligent tell igent cooperation which were contemplated by the constitution makers it is a tine fine and an exceptional thing to have two such men as these chosen together to the highest places in our government paradoxical dl as it may seem the choice of such an eh personalities is not a step toward lier personal government but away from it ohp more worthy ot of great office a man might be the less he be Is disposed to usurp the place with himself mr harding and mr coolidge have bave both made it entirely clear that to them office is a means and a nud mcd lum not for or exploitation of self but of service for others and the higher the office the greater the service and to the greater number be of people there is undoubtedly as mr harding aptly said a real job before them the nation has full confidence that they are real men who are going to tackle it together it will watch with interest and with cheerful assurance the practical working out of their coo cooperation pera if on harveys weekly |
