of a bill in charge of welling tor for the relief of the wounded and disabled soldiers of the world war in tact fact who knows of a single bill bearing the name of welling WHAT HAS WELLING DONE PERHAPS mr welling will pause in the tha course of his campaign to tell us what he has done to entitle him to a seat in the senate for some years he has been a congressman and his people have heard him occasionally but our memories are short and we are prone to forget what our statesmen have done for us in washington take the case of mr welling ills his supporters say that he achieved many I 1 notable things while in the lower house ot of congress but they do not go eo into detail the democrats admit nay boast that mr welling was nominated not because 0 of the imposing grandeur 0 of his record but because he made a good keynote speech at the state convention ven tion upholding wilson without batting baiting an eye or crossing a t the consequence was that the magnificent bille ent moyle second assistant secretary ot of the treasury who had stood the brunt ot of many battles in unhappy years was cast into the scrap heap and the loud mr welling was given a commission to go forth and roar into the ear ot of the public no doubt mr welling has improved as an orator orator since he went to washington but after all we want in the united states sendie senate a man who aias has done things not one who polishes metaphors utah Is interested in having in the united states senate one who not only has accomplished much tor for his country and his state but who can accomplish more never has utah had such an opportunity to reap the be benefit fit of senator smoots long experience peri ence once ha hard work and extraordinary ability tin fil nuance lance recently sen senator ator harding declared in a private conversation with a prominent utahn that senator smoot was the greatest financial expert who had ever been in the united states stales senate of course iou except senator aldrich sald said the visitor not at all replied harding in many ways senator smoot is much abler in financial matters than was aldrich that the democrats ot of the senate recognized the senators senator a capacity tor for constructive lawmaking law making is evidenced by the eulogies which senator thomas themas and senator underwood have uttered from time to time and also by democratic votes just before adjournment journ ment the senate without a dissenting sen liing tIng vote passed senator smoots bill to recognize the government governmental operation Js still based on the methods devised by the great alexander hamilton because these methods are antiquated aut ant equated they are costly and yet decade after decade the outworn governmental machinery has been used to grind out the necessary work it is like trying to haul a freight train of 1920 with a locomotive of 1835 nor should the people bf utah lose oso sight of the fact that senator harding and senator smoot are close friends the election of harding and smoot will bring utah into the first rank of prestige the citizen |
