Show opposed to high salary the school patrons of 0 south summit district which embraces kamas and other live towns in that section are opposed to tile the selection of J L kearns as superintendent ot of the three districts as will be seen from the following clipped fro from tile the kias kamas courant of may atay the board ot of trustees ot of the three school districts of summit coun county ty met at coalville Co alville on tuesday the tile the main purpose of 0 the meeting beins being Iverin the appointment of a school su ru or supervisor super vior for the three districts jointly all the members of tills this district were present except mr air Ki knight light J L kearns of 0 park city who has been the county superintendent su per in tor for more than two years was the only candidate considered and lie he was unanimously elected the salary was placed at 1800 per annum with an allowance of extra for expenses with tile the understanding that lie he should have six weeks vacation each year nod and that he should spend one week each month nt in each of tile the districts and one week in his office all three districts to divide equally the salary and expenses many of tile the residents of this district t are arc much put out at employing a man at so large a salary it seems thai that while mr kearns has had a salary of 1000 his expenses have amounted to the sum of 1200 a year above the salary which seems to many a most unreasonable sum still it may be that investigation would show it to be none too much it I 1 does not seem probable that our commissioners I 1 ners would have allowed this expense account unless they were convinced that it was all right but the people of this district feel that it is too much and they also think that it ought to be fixed some way by which v they should not have lave to pay as much as aa park city with many more schools and with an assessed valuation of one million more no doubt park city and coalville Co alville are happy over the result the students of the south summit high school have been very active and open in their opposition to tile the action of the board so much so that they called a mass meeting to meet at the high school monday night an account of the mass meeting follows monday evening the assembly hall of the high school was well ell filled with representatives from every district in t the I 1 e valley except woodland and peoa geoa abednego williams was made chairman and J W guild secretary after a discussion of tile the questions that had called the meeting together resolutions were adopted to the effect that it was the sense of tile the meeting that the salary of the county superintendent was too high that tile the meeting objected to consolidation with respect to supervisor and if consolidation was necessary they objected to paying one third of his salary and expenses when the other districts had a much larger population and assessed valuation also they recommended employing emping home talent as far as available A committee of one from each school district was chosen to draft resolutions to present to the board setting forth the sense of the meeting this committee consists of J W guild kamas john franson oakley al L corbett francis hugh evans marion n R W maxwell axwell AT peoa geoa C L gines woodland the spirit 0 of the meeting was not personal but intense in its opposition to high salaries that took the peoples hard earned money they felt that the taxes were almost more than they could stand already the od high school board was highly complimented on the excellent service they had rendered during their term of office their strict integrity and faithfulness to duty this well deserved tribute was heartily received by all if this meeting had been held two weeks ago it was said much trouble would have been averted |
