Show NEED OF OPERATION cooperation CO perfect control of child is obtained only through home and school working in unison tile the following is from the september number of the mothers magazine it is from the pen of ella vines flagg young superintendent ot of schools ot of ale the city of chicago arid and is timely filled etith wholesome advice tor for parents teachers and pupils ABdu education cation of the children through school system has advanced to a stage in america no other continent has ever known the knowledge which only a potentate might possess centuries ago is today through popular education the comeri common property ot of millions of juniors thus far has education of the masses progressed and so much stronger is the moral and industrial world for the growth ot of knowledge moans means the growth of reason and the growth of reason logically leads to an increase in the power ol of self con arol when self control becomes millennium will be at hand but supreme in all human beings the the millennium has not come therefore progress steps must be considered which will vill increase self control these are constantly in the minds of school teachers Achors te from the kindergarten to the principal end and from the principal to the superintendent and the trustees or members of board of education yet as these steps are studied is one thing lacking the tha absence of harmonious understand understanding mg between parents anil and the teacher never will the public or private schools of 0 this or any other nation attain their highest usefulness until parents take as much interest inhere t in the factors controlling uie schools as they do in their own private affairs somehow erroneously mo theil and fathers have cultivated the thought though t that after a child is enrolled in the lowest grade of a school they may dismiss the of hours every day such parents seem to think their sole duty daty to the school system is to pay regularly their educational taxes all child problems are strenuously moved to tile the shoulders of 0 the school authorities A mother complacently remarks to a visiting friend my children are in school I 1 no longer need worry about them it if worry morry is of aid to any human being thit that is just the time nhen she begin to worry about lier her children the moment has arrived when she ought to know it if home training has fitted her children at all to attend school the teachers side school teachers with all the dignity that attaches to their profession are only human atter alter all they come from the same clay the sanie same sod the same sources that children and their parents do they have nerves emotions and dull days joys and sorrows sorrow sack racking disappointments and unexpected happiness just as do parents and they have something else something which is constantly staring them in the face the futility of much of their work with the children it if their efforts are not supported by the parents who hare bore those children nothing so stirs a conscientious teachers heart as the knowla e that those who have brought children into the world and entrusted them to his or her care are vitally interested in what she is striving to do with arid and bior for them A teacher is an officer of the state slate but a parent is an aa officer of the great mass of 0 humanity the state in itself cannot make children tender loving obedient and useful many parents think that the state can do this they blindly assert 1 I pay for the church the school and the government having I 1 expect them to make my chud child a u useful saint citizen no one sees moral clearly clearl yi the folly of such sur h argument than the school te teacher cher and no factor in ill public life hungers more to explain the fallacy of such argument to to parents than the teacher school church and government can call never lie be more than contributing means of 0 support to home education and home discipline it if the home influences fluen ces are negle neglect cd or v holly cholly wrong the trinity of school church and government at best eau can only partly control tho the child perfect child control is obtainable only through the home working in fa unison with the school church and government school work and school discipline are materially enlivened amid and strength ened fedt by the parents of a pupil nav ing an intimate relationship with the teacher ot of that pupil when a mother will take the timo time to sit eown down and confidentially talk with the teacher about the characteristics of her child the teacher gains for her own guidance gui danca in sympathetically dealing with the child two important pieces of information the kind of home life the child has hag had the character of the child before it came under school discipline this knowledge a teacher is entitled to have it if she is to be at all successful in her work children must mean something more to her than mere numbers mary jones must not be to her merely no 5 of class A so and so but mary jones who was born 0 of healthy parent sher father a grocer and her mother be fo tore re marriage the daughter of 0 a firmer mary was born after the couple had been married to years and nolle they were iu in quite humble circumstances during infancy her mother suffered a severe nervous shock which appeared to affect the child and at five years ot of age it developed tendencies ot of great irritability lack of concentration of mind etc etc etc with this knowledge at her command and having some of the companionship panion ship and much of the confidence of the the teacher of mary jones readily grasps why mary Is bitterly opposed to mathematics Is somewhat partial to geography fond of romantic history and overly fond of poetry she has a sherlock holmes clue to the childs nature and can gently diplomatically adjust her work ja in school so that her weak mental and moral ports are nurtured md those attributes in which she lios too much strength be delicately but effectively curbed the mothers side few mothers exist I 1 believe who dj not nol long for or a confidant whom they can trust some second party with whom they may frankly discuss the tha weak and the strong sides of 0 their children it is to the everlasting honor of the educational profession that where teachers are made such confidants tiey rarely it if ever betray the trust reposed in them from five to eight hours a day five days in the week during school terms the children aro ara placed in thel that care the case not infrequently happens that some of these teachers misunderstand children that they make grave errors in handling them but this is the exception and not the rule more frequently they have to be mother as well as teacher to their pupils and it is against this situation that I 1 protest A mother who will carefully study lne ine teacher above her children analyze her character and then as he proves worthy of trust grad gradually u a ily give her afuli a full understanding from the home viewpoint of the childs rby physical and mental instantly creates a new ally for the cause of moral sound citizenship motherhood Alother hood is not merely confined to the bearing and feeding of 0 the child the complete functions of motherhood axe are far more than this the laws osgood citizenship high morality respect for the laws of 0 nan man and god imperatively demand i hat a mother mot hershall shall be more intimate with her child after it has left the home shelter and entered school tha than when it was wholly at home to bring about this intimacy to keep a stronger hold bold upon the child heart than ever before the mother can tako take no more significant and helpful step than to welcome to her heart her confide confidence ric e and the home circle the teacher of the child the I 1 forces of evil than find arrayed against their influence not one but two hearts two wills wills two brains relationship of chis this kind between parent and beachel teacher we call community of 0 interest i i this community lof of interest is hungrily desired by every od ad educator in this nation to day but it cannot exise exist as a orle one sided bided proposition the teacher who offers otters sympathy and interest to the home and its occupants must receive sympathy interest and understandings understand riding ins in return |
