Show ANNUAL convention OP of NATIONAL GRAME 1 congress has given to the united states a denatured alcohol lw law equal to that of germany 0 denver nov 14 every state in the union is represented at the annual convention of the national grange which was called to order in the chamber of commerce here at 11 today by president fint 11 11 bachelder of new hampshire the first session was occupied with tho the appointment of committees and other routine work tho session will continue ten days and an attendance of 1500 delegates is expected at the afternoon session the national mastey master ex governor J N chalder Ch aldor of now hampshire delivered his annual address address to a largo large and enthusiastic aud letice representing not alono alone the farmers of america but the allied interests of science and education the address was in part as follows follow sf considering the great importance of inaugurating a policy of ef national improvement of our highways at the earliest possible date I 1 recommend that the grange in addition to reaffirming its position in support of this measure conduct a special tampa campaign ign to secure the prompt passage of I 1 a t satisfactory bill and furthermore as much valuable vilu able time has been lost through the failure of congress to act I 1 also recommend that a new grange bill he be prepared and submitted to con gres gresi i increasing the total appropriation called for to to be b divided into five annual annual appropriations of each to be expended in co operation with states stater for the improvement pro of main highways has given to the united states a denatured alcohol law equal to that of the german man law which is the broadest and most liberal of any other nation I 1 1 I am informed that many now distilleries till eries erles are being planned in the west as well as in the east to make alcohol from corn potatoes beet sugar etc development should be encouraged until every section of the country has its industrial distillery 9 in order to secure the early establishment I 1 lish ment of a parcels post I 1 believe it I 1 will be necessary to include other measures of postal reform in our demands arid and I 1 recommend as measures that should be advocated by the grange in connection with the parcels post first correct the abuses ot of the franking privilege second withdraw free postage from all departments of the government and provide in lieu thereof that the postal service of each department be met by specified appropriations to be included in the general congressional appropriation third provide for the readjustment of railroad mall mail contracts fourth make it obligatory on the part of the postmaster general to contain in his annual reports detailed information of each department and the revenue derived from each I 1 am convinced that a grange postal reform bill will receive consideration era tion referring to the propaganda carried in favor of a ship subsidy m measure mr bachelder said this will make it necessary for members of the grange to again cooperate on behalf of the taxpayers of the country against this attempt to devote public funds to private ends and it is only necessary that we should mako makii it plain to the representatives in congress from our representative districts that we ive are unalterably opposed to this subsidy scheme in order to insure its permanent defeat |
