Show THE MAHLER FRANCHISE he following has an important bearing on a subject of great importance to the people of ogden and ia reproduced comment it i an editorial taken from the logan journal ot saturday for once the logan journal tigress with the ogden standard that Is in its deprecation of the ogden city councils grant ot a street railway franchise to barney canler for a period of ono hundred years the standard truthfully ic marks why this effort to tie the hands of generations yet unborn and to fasten upon ogden city that which may proe hagaly objectionable in the years to come if the street railway people intend to do the light thing by the people of ogden they can afford to haie their acan reviewed in ten twenty or thirty years from now and then it their conduct it commendable and their works are advantageous to this community they can rest assured of an extension of time but for alie present officials ot the city to sign away all rights and all restraints for one hundred years con veya to our mind a recklessness coupled with a disregard for the fu opre that Is appalling where the virtue of such fian chases is appreciated they are treated as property pio perty rights not to be agnen away simply for the asking pio motors are swarming through the country invading every city seeking to obtain these franchised franchisee franch isee and sell them at great but where good judgment prevails the cities eni leavor to eliminate the middie men and make such terms with the actual investors as are commensurate with me benefits to be bestowed the same gentleman applied to the logan city council for a similar franchise he wished one that copied the entire city for single or double tracks with all necessary turnouts switches sidetracks etc for a period of one hundred years and he wanted all he asked or nothing and wanted it served quick and hot the guarantees upon the pait of tho pie posed company and the restrictions to which it consent practically nil tho journal wap strenuous in its opposition 0 o any such grant the democratic members of tho city council opposed it and shortly the aid of the public was given mr in he place would bicok no opposition agree to no leml tationa JM but he dortly found that no one was caran a darn and ho finally accepted a franchise for halt the asked and the streets upon which his road could run lamoil for hm to a number ot restrictions and safeguards and mailo a number of concessions but had mr mahler proposition been as fair as possible upon their face or even appeared to jain in favor of the city the journal would still have the franchise had it been drawn for a hundred years even fifty years is entirely too long tho moral right of the present generation to benl or bind alio yet unborn is an exceedingly questionable one then the trend of the times U all in favor of the public ownership of public utilities and it is blindness to ignofo that tact tho success of similar under municipal ownership Is too marked A lesson to be ignored and whore guch ownership is out of the present lange of possibility at least stands ns a wain lag against long again look at the wonderful stride that have been made in the field viewed from the aspect of twenty five yeara ago the impossible has happened along these lines who can tell what progress will bo made during the next twenty five years to say nothing of a hundred bailer all the circumstances is it not the height of injustice to bind coming generations to present conditions for so long a period mr mahler having read the above editorial in tho morning examined telephoned the standard that the logan journal ia in error that tho irani ahle granted him in logan is for and not for fifty years how about ahls logan journal t |
