| Show STATE SCHOOL FOR BLIND CLOSING EXERCISES ARE HELD AT THE institution program Is an excellent one and la nicely rendered closing exercises at the state school for the deaf and blind were held this morning at 10 in the large assembly room at the institution A large number of people were present and exceptional interest was manifested by all in the program and exhibit of school work the assembly room which was crowded to its utmost capacity was beautifully decorated with yellow and red roses pictured Pic turea of bome of those who have been connected with the school and prominent educators of the seat hung upon the walls the souvenir program was particularly unique and interesting because ot its containing samples of the work done in both the deaf and blind departments the program itself as rendered by the pupils was instructive to a high degree serving to give those present an idea of tho excellent work done by tho states deaf and blind these children are doing fully as well as children in the public schools in similar grades the degree of proficiency to which they have been brought represents unlimited patience and ceaseless work the program was as follows prayer hon F W chambers violin solo Tr aumerl schumann thomas biddulph speech demonstration miss krause and class piano solo dance on the lawn bohm lulu mcdonald recitation the wind R L stevenson pearl west vocal solo the heart bowed down from the bohemian girl balfe fitzgerald language demonstration miss eddy and class piano solo lack janle mcclellan recitation bed in summer R L stevenson rulon thompson recitation louie sevy writing and reading of braille two blind pupils nearer my god to thee in signs lizzie maggie and mary history seventh grade pupils civics ninth grade pupils quartette home sweet home murray alien fitzgerald james higganson thomas biddulph the numbers were of such merit that it is almost impossible to make particular mention of any one attention must be called however to the speech and language demonstration by the pupils of the lower grades some of the pupils have been in school receiving instruction in speech only since last september and the advancement in this regard is nothing less than marvelous marve lons the musical selections from tho pupils of the blind department were very good and show a marked advancement van cement nearer my god to thee was given in the sign language by three of the larger deaf girls to the accompaniment of miss mitchell this number was received with much applause by those assembled and was very beautiful and expressive as rendered in the language of silence miss mitchell sang the grand old song in her usual artistic manner the class which Is to be sent to the st louis fair gave a speech and language demonstration and undoubtedly the people of utah who visit the fair will have cause to feel proud of thia exhibit no less interesting and instructive was the exhibit in the dining room which had been cleared and decorated for the occasion excellent samples of work done in carpenter shop shoe j shop printing office cooking bottling of fruit baking sewing fancy work bead work basket making art room work hammock making blacksmithing and literary work from the school rooms many words of surprise and praise were beard on every hand upon the excellence of the exhibit an exhibition was given in the gymnasium by the pupils of both depart mente in these drills the pupils have reached a state of well nigh perfection fec tion the movements were executed with absolute precision and much grace at this most worthy of institutions the blind have almost been made to see and the deaf to hear BO perfect are their hands and cultivated the once awful affliction of blindness or deafness is reduced mightily under tho skilled hands of competent teachers |
