Show THE GAME OF WHIP VAN WINKLE story and game are desy des y THIS lined to fill a longfelt long felt wanta they arc to fill out a painful gap in the history of one of americas most noted historical char that character Is rip van winkle everybody knows 01 him and how e played at bowls in the mountains vet who knows what kind of game it avas that resulted so strangely this will tell you the description of the magic game chich was taught to old rip by the mountain gnomes was written out on a piece of quaking aspen bark in the midnight in the middle of in uneven year by Sa king of hc little men he hid it in the dark st part of a dark cave and wove a over it so that only the tallest son of a short father should ever be ible to get it providing he entered he cave neither by walking or run ling or jumping or crawling last winter it happened that the tallest son of a short father was look ng for a rabbit which had hopped nto the cave and while he stood stooping ito a bull came along and gave um n bump which sent him into the ave head first so having fulfilled the conditions of the spell he found the bark manuscript lie sat down and studied it but though he was the short fathers tall st son he was not by any means the smartest so he soon became perplexed and as he had a brain that was unaccustomed to thought he fell asleep while he was asleep the little men stole out of their holes in the mountain and filled his head with queer dreams they made him dream that he was playing rip van winkle and that he played at bowling with the gnomes and beat them every time faster and faster he rolled the bowls down the mountain and they made such a tremendous noise that the oldest inhabitant in the village said january thunder will make the crops a wonder indeed no said the next to the oldest inhabitant its the other way if it thunders oer the snow all the crops will fail to grow thereupon the two old inhabitants became bitter enemies and wrote to the papers about it then the tallest son dreamed that the goblins grew tired of being beaten and all at once they seized the tenpins and belabored him until he woke up he felt stiff and sore and he was quite sure that he had had another experience peri ence like that of rip van winkle so he clambered heavily down the mountain and entered his native village prepared to tell his wondrous story but to his sorrow he discovered that nobody was surprised to ace him also nobody seemed a day older than when he went away and when his short father came out and roared at him to know why he had not done his chores the tallest son sadly realized that he had only been asleep a few hours but he really and truly did have the 4 magic bark of quaking aspen he told everybody about it but nobody believed it for the king of the little men had unfortunately caught old rips name wrong in his haste and had written it down as whip van winkle however the tallest son formed a bowling club and they all played the new game it made him exceedingly popular everywhere except at home where the short father had to do all the work but virtue is its own reward and so it wa in this case for the bowling club nominated the tallest son for congress the state legislature sheriff coroner alderman tax clerk and town constable lie would have been elected to each and every one of these office if there had not been too many votes against him As it was he gained so much political experience that he ran tri for village dop catcher and he lived happily ever after earning fully anc as much as the anfor dunate men who had gone into politics apu can never tell about these en charted goblin gifts and they stilt play the goblin game of bowls in the village of rip or whip van winkle aad this is the way cut around the circle hat divides the nine pins mount U on heavy cardboard and stick a pin through its center at the point marked by the circle held in the old roans hands then cut out the round men at the top this is all the cutting you will haveis do when you turn the you may make a strike of all seventeen rin or only one or three or indeed any odd number it all depends on your luck the count as will be seen depends upon how many bowl ng pins match so as to make complete pins if the circle stops precisely where it js shown before cut tioff you have made a royal strike and need not trouble with the numbers on the board each player selects a man A twirl of the and the player places his man upon whatever figure is indicated should two play ars each hit upon the same number the last at the wheel sends his opponent back again to the starting of the game lumbers a 70 7 0 and 6 are safety post and arc in shaded panels if a player is on one of these he is safe and then the second player on striking the same number loses his turn A tally sheet must be kept for the player to win must eventually strike all of the pins or numbers repeated numbers count against the play erthe addition of these enst be subtracted from their sum total for instance if a player is at number 16 and has already struck 14 or 12 or any other number and his turn of the wheel brings either of those numbers back again that number must be subtracted from the combination of the other numbers already put down on the tally course will compel the player to fall behind in his score having eone he numbers arop I 1 to 17 the player chooses any circle in the center of the board that he may wish moving from its corresponding sp of 17 when all four men arc placed in these circles and properly arranged the head of old rip himself will be shown in this part of the game the last man or circle to go in place wins the game it becomes a matter of interest therefore to delay your own progress as much as possible the better a player manages to do this the more amusing will the antics of his neighbor be if in choosing his home circle on the board the player finds that he cannot move his man so as to fit properly into the scheme of the rip van winkle face he may try repeatedly on he wheel for the seventeen strike br two counts that will make that number as 8 0 etc MS |
