Show v IA v i r c i lr 0 g i pans syl g 0 B chimi ARIS nov the fair parl are beginning to appreciate walking as an exercise the aralas and other favorite avenues of the boia du boulogne are crowded with chic pedestal ans and the hats worn are bewildering in variety and beauty each day brings something new in shape idea r and design in ml manery nery and we decide that this or that ia surely the accepted style but alas styles in hats are just as uncertain as other earthly blessings I 1 have every reason to believe that the black and white long haired felts have A come to stay as they are so soft and be coming and may be bent to suit every face lifted high by a bandeau or trimmed heavily on the outside to give the required droop it Is said that a woman cannot resist a new bonnet possibly this is a libel but what Is absolutely true Js that she would rather wear her last years gowns than her old hats and she ia perfectly right as nothing alvea such a touch of elegance to the whole appearance pe arance as a stunning chapeau I 1 say no blame to her it she finds some of the caroline and verot hats a temptation hats impress one with their victor the turbans are many ot them like those in the old fashion books of the forties and if it were not that the spirit of former days Is attuned to our times one would almost look for a poke bonnet a crinoline and coy glances to trip on the scene with the later version of one phase of the forties there is a radical difference today Is dominated by undulating forma in the dangling ends at the back and sides this is carried to such extremes in some hats that the streamers actually hang to the waist and even below I 1 notice that the turbans which have several forms prevail mostly with undulating du brims and the trimmings fall into these wavy lines in a charming gracefulness besides the turbans there is a flat louis seize picture hat which Is very bewitching in its possibilities with undulating feathers placed flat on the crown and running from the front straight to the back to tall low over the hair there is another shape much in evidence the breton sailor it is round with an upward curving brim this shape lends itself remarkably well to the contrasting velvety velvets border and cl eyerly placed wang style of trimming and also is at 1 tamest in fluffy felts it la an especially good shape tor young garl or young looking girls I 1 saw such a pretty rosy faced woman one afternoon anthe bols du boulogne she waa but bh bright nd breton fluffy felt hat ros etes tucked in over the hair fand wings fixed the natty achl they know so well hw to attain here iipp gown was a black tailor costume and her nice chapeau of watte felt with a black border and black satin ribbon was exactly the right hat on the right head how becoming black and white are to a fresh face and even to the sallow just a case of extremes meeting 1 I suppose but all the same a merciful providence tor us whether rosy or sallow when black Is so modish as it promises to be this some of the newest hat are made in palest colored cloth trimmed with the faintest tints of roses and foliage there ar some attractive red chiffon hats to be found with wreaths of be gonias andi and I have seen some excellent effects produced by a combination of pale blue stitched cloth and white asters many white felt hats are to be trimmed ath black wings and an effective model Is entirely made of black chenille slightly turned up all round the back being trimmed with four white wings pointing downward to rest on the hair the three cornered hat has not entirely and an aggressive cock perched on its crown Is no unusual sight red felt hats and when these are worn by the right person along with a dark frieze dress they look ex are best trimmed with a biot black and white I 1 have come across a good example with the brim decked underneath with narrow of white lawn edged with black lace while on the back of the crown were two black wings A knot of bright red velvet rested on the hair at the side of the front paradise plumes wave on all sides of more expensive models in millinery and alas tho osprey does not seem to have exactly gone it adems hardly possible after these descriptions to tell you that extreme simplicity Is the keynote of the most exclusive confections confect ions the esq alte fitness of all these rich materials Is brought out with a few deftly laid folds of velvet or silk A great quantity of this silk Is used on hats and composes entirely some of the smartest ones there Is quite a simple hat which will be very effective when wc n it Is a creation of black velvet th e brim Is formed of piped with satin and bound round the top with ermine A black ostrich tip aad osprey lend importance to the left side the ruffle Is an achievement of taffeta skillfully worked with loops of chenille where the ermine Is again introduced this Is charming enough tor any woman oh for a pen of quency to picture a hat of black broadtail justa little severe in out linea glorified gainsborough with a lovely upward tilt of brim at the adriaan avalanche of black ostrich tips equally attractive by reason of Us simplicity is another hat entirely composed ot narrow panne ribbon lined with moire and decked with ostrich feathers held by a great steel crescent the woman who likes coques toques will to resist one of cream just a trifle trl corne in intention the crown draped with soft fold bojc ivory tulle and the brim faced up with clusters of little mouse colored loops while ostrich feathers shaded to fit in with the scheme tumble in elegant profusion on to the hair at the back black velvet hats are very smart they are expensive but so useful lending themselves to almost every kind of costume even the tiniest children are dressed up in them though on the tola they do look grew some and somber my girl friends could not do better than try these especially it their furs are either ermine fox or pale gray chinchilla for teas and receptions and I 1 might add tor luncheons these hats are very nice you may extend your admiration to a hat which was the model for a bevy of bridesmaids it was of pale pink panne draped with lovely lace held at the back with cut steel rings this was indeed a dainty piece of headgear A toreador affair was a study in black and white the crown in ermine bilk plush and the brim embroidered on with black and white designs from the back depended a bunch of grapes and leaves all white these are hardly true to nature but the violence Is forgiven when seen against a pretty girls light or dark hair another hat of the toque sort Is a three cornered pale pink fluffy felt with transparent medallions of brown silk guipure and two pink ostrich plumes this Is moat bewitching another hat in aln k Is larger and of the inevitable fluffy felt with deeper pink velvet roses and pale pink satin ribbon and stall another black beaver walh a panache of feathers all over the back and front and black satin ribbon ro tucked in underneath the brim among the outing hats the motor caps lead they are interestingly ugly some are of real athia leather staff caps wh lle others are ot white kad the v bilg are really more th caps aa my lady must haw her complexion protected from the dust and dirl to be worn with the white kid sp la a double gossamer veil bialk velvet rings some of the maska and veils are roost remarkable resembling nothing so much as those worn by the persian la adlea 0 the harem with their tantalizing peep ot pretty eyes the parisian child has superseded to a great extent pet dog and she now takes her smartly frocked tot with her on her drives so of course mademoiselle must have a stunning costume and the piece de resistance Is usually a rosebud of a bonnet this Is perfectly fascinating so attractive in tact that her big sister borrowed some of the little ladya picturesque chiffons it Is difficult to distinguish the seasons in these affairs with their yards and yards of lace ribbon and chiffon and velvet A coat for a child of three Is charming of lambs wool cozily lined with nuns veiling and adorned with big pearl buttons the cuffs are trimmed with silk with a collar to match edged with albet the bonnet Is a very dainty affair in white silk strapped with satin and turned off the face with a gauged of soft silk trimmed with rosettes and tips I 1 am devoting all my energy to the girls hats and coats but for boys are equally interesting it not so varied the little gentlemen so soon follow in their fathers footsteps these days that all fuss and feathers are ta bloed booed even in their yoi ingest years they usually wear the blouse coat the trimmings oj thereat as well as the caps themselves areef feather CATHERINE TALBOT |
