Show ASSAULTED BY AN UNKNOWN NEGRO A colorado railroad station the scene of an outrage committed at midnights y denver colo march 25 A special to the post from la junta colo says 9 mrs henrietta 11 miller a gray haired woman aged 67 years going from los angeles california to denver to visit relatives was brutally assaulted and outraged in the santa fe railroad yards bare between 10 and 11 last night by a negro porter on a pullman car running between denver and la junta W IL wallace of denver is under arrest but has been taken from la cupta to prevent lunching lynching lyn ching mrs miller is now lying in a critical condition at A local hotel being attended by physicians of the santa fe company her chances for recovery are said to be about even I 1 the assault was one of the most brutal crimes ever committed in this vicinity and the aged victim waa left for dead in an isolated section of the city by her len ligh assailant pt the assault has caused intense excitement in la junta where numerous other criminal attacks have occurred during the past months mrs miller arrived last night in a tourist car on train no 2 known as the california limited running between los angelea and chicago the train arrived here at 1030 mrs miller got off the train intending to leave for denver at this morning seeing a negro in n pullman porters uniform eha asked him where the denver sleeper was he said he would show her the car and elie walked with him through the yards for a considerable distance finally she told her companion she would go back to the depot lie struck her on the head with liis fist felling her partly stunned and then carried her ito an ice bouse nearby by tah timo sirs miller had recovered somewhat and began to struggle violently in her efforts to release herself the negro struck her several times on tho head and then to stop any possible outcry closed his fingers upon her throat until she ceased her struggles and lay like one dead about 12 mrs miller recovered consciousness she was stiff with cold and so badly wounded that she could hardly walk she could not utter a soun dabove a whisper BO cruelly had she been choked she crawled back to the depot following the tracks BO that she might not become lost geddling Redd ling the long depot she fell in a swoon on the platform and lay there until discovered by railroad men bhe was picked up and carried into the depot and restoratives restora tives hastily applied the were notified and doctoral summoned treatment of the physicians mrs miller soon recovered enough to tell the story of her assault she gave a minute description of her assailant this description was recognized by the railroad men as fitting W U wallace the porter wallace was found in the car of which he had charge and was arrested 1 in the car were found some garments which had been washed and were not yet dry As news of the assault spread a crowd began to gather and threats of lunching lynching lyn ching were made wallace waa placed in a closed carriage and guarded by several officers was driven out of town ie was safely lodged in jail at pueblo this afternoon it is said that before he was taken to pueblo bo was identified by mrs miller |
