| Show achley IN THE HOUSE committee on naval affairs decides koput lan end to the bitter contest T washington larch ai alio llio hoise committee on naval affairs by a vote of 7 to 4 today adopted a resolution concurring in the decisions of president roosevelt as to further agitation in alic schley controversy and indefinitely postponing all bills and resolutions on tho subject the report of the sub commit tee as adopted gives all the various resolutions which have been introduced and says s youir subcommittee sub committee to whom the several bills and resolutions introduced in the house in relation to rear aamir al W S achley were referred lias had the same under consideration and his the following report the unfortunate controversy in con the santiago attracted wide publio and lias been taiti subject of four official inquiries and investigations vim 1 by president mckinley by the united stales court of claims by the naval court of inquiry asked for by admiral and by president roosevelt on appeal from the finding of the naval court of inquiry president Pies ident roosevelt concluded his finding in the following words in concluding their report the members of tho court of inquiry state that they recommend that no further hearing be biad in the matter with this recommendation i I 1 most heartily concur there Is tia excuse whatever from cither side for any furt lier agitation of this unhappy controversy to keep it ali re would merely do damage navy and to tho country your committee having in view the interest of the american navy and of all concerned fully concurs in the conclusions expressed in the words of president above quoted we therefore recommend that further consideration of said bills and resolutions be indefinitely postponed and that no further action be taken there on the vote was on party lines except that sir mudd of maryland voted the democrats against adopting alie lre port in detail the vote was leab foss dayton i butler watson cousins and roberts nays mudd republican and of Virg mia kitchen and leeier Te eIer democrats i prior to the disposition of the subject sir mudd moved a favorable ro port on iiii resolution giving the thanks of congress to admiral schley and tho officers and men who served with him in the battle of santiago this was lost by a vote 0 4 to 7 |
