Show GREA celebration the day marked an epoch in ogden s history and the sun sets on the most complete holiday ever celebrated in the west yesterday ended in a blaze of glory for ogden and weber county the sun went down upon the greatest and most successful of celebrations ever held between denver and the coast all day the streets were crowded with people and at night there was not one dissatisfied with the days entertainment not one unpleasant incident marred the day and the parade and all programs and other details were carried out as per arrangement ran gement and most successfully the capacity of the opera house waa taxed to its limit long before the hour set for the commencement of the pro gram but the arrangements for handling the people were such that no confusion resulted it was a large audience but a good natured one the meeting was called to order by chairman I 1 L dark of alie executive committee who introduced mayor wm glasmann as chairman of the meeting mr glasmann in the course of his remarks congratulated the people of ogden city and weber county upon the making of a holiday and coming out to celebrate on st patricks day it showed that ogden had a new lease of life and was going to move forward he stated that salt lake city had dreamed so long of securing the cutoff cut off that aliey actually saw a mirage on the lake of an actual passenger train crossing the lake and coming into salt lake he stated that ogden secured the cutoff cut off business enterprises and real estate bad gone down in value and the prospects of the city looked very bad indeed these were the conditions when ogden secured the cutoff cut off ogden now stands before the west with a brighter future than any city in the west it ia now time for all to take hold and help the city and for all to work in harmony miss mac driver then favored the meeting with A vocal solo which called forth prolonged applause the chairman in a brief speech introduced trod governor wells who was received with long continued applause the governors address was as follows fellow citizens of agdens I 1 am reminded by this gathering and this occasion of one of the most effective stories of the great novelist charles dickens which was entitled A tale of two cities of course he did not have ogden and salt lake in mind at the time he wrote the story and therefore made no allusion in even the slightest degree to them his works as a rule if not entirely related to the peoples and scenes of the effete and overworked over worked centers of the old world it never having been his good fortune to get further west than the atlantic seaboard ho died without having impressed upon his master mind the wonders which our newer commonwealths present to the gaze and contemplation temp lation of mankind both salt lake and ogden are infants by comparison with london and paris but what healthy gigantic infants they are I 1 how they have grown even within alie recollection of us who reached this stage of action after they were borot and how they arc now bounding along the highway of general prosperity marking their onward course with grand achievements and honors richly won in the cause of human comfort happiness and contemplation temp lation the inspection th tion are so cheering the language of a thai I 1 might convoy andew you more vividly and en the thoughts which possess ihil auspicious occasion to the city of ogden has been vouchsafed by the great creator many unusual advantages being abc the very finest of all tho natural gateways of commerce in the intermountain region with a vast water supply containing both power and with soil and with physical configuration of guch character aa to give the location the charm of it had at its very beginning a foundation anguring auguring augu ring well for its greatness and prosperity but what is of no less consequence it at once and ever since has attracted fo it stalwart men men of enterprise sagacity public spirit and skill in the building up of municipalities some of the brightest men of the union have settled here and the brighter they were the they settled the results of their work are BO far only partly unfolded from alie inception of the railway ogden lias been the practical and with the exception of a short period tho actual terminus of the original transcontinental lines unquestionably there was bome feeling of at salt lake city when it waa decided to take to tho water and leave the capital forty milea out in the cold but I 1 OT sure wo acro also glad at the consummation in chief that other things acra not permitted to create ill will or any other feeling than a determination to pull if pot into a pacific at icart into a southern pacific mod 1 that both cities arc paira ot one great grand commonwealth and that tho advancement of cither would by 0 o means bo detrimental to the other we odthe capital city rejoice in tho rejoicing of you of the junction city and are eager to taka BO much unto our delvca as can bo induced to como our way we arc assembled today to give expression to the feelings of exultation oer 0 great and important improvement inalie route of the taink fineg ine here by means of which tho road will be made straighter and the time shorter in a considerably consider ablo measure it 1 ametter of great consequence to ogden and a justifiable caus af jubilation we are hero to participator in your not as op ponente or those who are disposed to sulk in their tents because of honors and rewards won by their brethren elsewhere far from it that the two cities are and have been commercially competitors is natural you have these in your own midst and the yaro the mainspring of commercial activity there is a slight difference between emulation and envy and a vast difference between active jealousy and friendly rivalry that we of the capital desired the cutoff cut off because of the other kind of caal tal which would bo sure to follow in its railroad train ia undeniable that we made overtures to the powers that be looking to the diversion of alie road around the southern shore of the lake which belongs to both of us we shall also not attempt to palliate or deny it is even the fact that we stretched forth our hands expecting to catch the prize and just as ft B e thought wo could feel it materializing within our ardent grasp it disappeared like the baseless fabric of dream you won and we lost but the rep of the loser are here as bearers of an expression of its congratulations mingling their friendly feelings with your plainly apparent exuberance and wishing you many happy returns of the day A different result would have no doubt shifted the scene of action and transposed the parts taken but we all feel to say that it is better as it is for speaking of railways and gateways let us remember the scriptural assurance that wide is alie gate and broad is the way that to destruction and many there bo who go in thereat but straight is the way and narrow is the gate which unto life and few there be who find it to have obtained the cutoff cut off would leave been of great advantage to the people of salt lake not only from a financial but from other points of view and naturally it was desired coveted and applied for but wombat wo not overlook the important fact that to have been deprived of it would have been of greater injury to ogden than gaining it would have been of benefit to salt lake and feeling thus we may consider the incident closed there is no reason in the world why the two leading cities of this splendid state would bo other than friends and workers coworkers co thea have many interest in common and their ages are so nearly alie same that it seems as if they were twins and thua bound together by every tie of nature cities of this splendid state should be forgetful of the laurels well won and worthily worn by our sister city of the north she has to her credit the erection of tho first schoolhouse in utah and her institutes of learning have ever kept pace with if not somewhat in advance of the march of throughout tle commonwealth here the dissolution of the old political party linea took place and the new alignment which placed us in accord with prevailing conditions elsewhere in the nation was consummated here is and was the first residence of the first united states senator ever chosen by the sovereign state of utah much more in this line might bo said but as you are as familiar with the subject as I 1 am perhaps it would no useful purpose and take up time which ought to be given to other things it is truly a source of pleasure to be able to partake of the flow of good feelings prevail to com dinglo with BO many whose thoughts actions and impulses lio wever divided by flold i of action or personal design are united in the most whole and energetic manner for the continued uplifting and carrying forward of the common cause which secures the greatness and con linued prosperity of our state in conclusion cl I 1 offer youia sentiment slay our tale of two be over and always a tale of clasped hands across alie apace which separates them and this the only separation they shall ever knowl the governor was greeted with pro longed applause at the end of his speech the chairman then introduced judge thomas marshall the utah representative of the southern
