| Show SALT LAKE NEWS DANIEL ALEXANDER KILLED HIM SELF daniel alexander a well known business man and an old time resident of salt lake city shot and killed himself at 5 yesterday afternoon with a revolver alio shooting is thought to have been entirely the re suit of an ac and although it was at first believed by alio authorities that boine of the circumstances pointed to suicide yet an investigation failed to give color to that theory the shooting occurred at the alexander home at first south street the bullet from a 45 calibre colts revolver which alie unfortunate man is supposed to have been cleaning at the time plunged through his head entering just above the left eyeball and emerging from the back of the head death was instantaneous there were no cye to the accident mr alexander had retired to his bedroom on the second floor of hia home and had been there about ten minutes when tho report of a revolver startled the household airs alexander and harry symonds who was visiting at the house rushed to the room to iland the door open exposing a horrible alexander jay motionless on the floor his head in a pool of blood and his face covered gore A hurried examination showed that he was dead A messenger was sent to secure a physician and notify the police it was evident that the muzzle of the revolver had been held at a distance of but 0 few inches from bis head when the shot was fired from all appearances he had been looking down the barrel when the hammer fell there was a rusty knife and a wad of paper on a table in the room showing that ha had intended cleaning the weapon an examination of the weapon showed further eliat it was extremely dirty there was but one cartridge in the gun and another lay on the floor it ia thought that the victim did not believe the revolver to be loaded it is known that he was extremely nearsighted and it was for that rca son it ia argued that he held the muzzle of the revolver ao close 10 his eyes while making the fatal examination of its condition mrs alexander and the children of the dead man were nearly prostrated with grief it was the birthday of mrs alexander and had been a quiet family reunion during the afternoon we were having such a pleasant time and mr alexander and myself were about to leave homo to spend the evening with friends said the grief stricken wife between outbursts of sobbing 1 I know it was an accident she continued because he be so cowardly as to kill himself and then he have any reason in the world for wishing to die mr alexander haa been a resident of utah for the past twenty seven years coming here arom nevada mo he resided for a number of years at ogden where he held the position of united states commissioner upon coming to salt lape ho conducted a large general store on main street during the hard times af 1893 he failed and made an assignment to bis son in law B steinman jr the creditors objected to steinman as assignee and had a receiver appointed before the matter was closed up alexander had lost every dollar he possessed including a ground on alie alexander building on south main street more recently he haa been alie manager of the bee shoe on main street he was in his year and leaves a wife and seven children to mourn hi loss arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made |
