EAST AGAINST irrigation washington jan 27 in an interview regarding the irrigation bill introduced by sir newlands New landa mr of wyoming stated tho bill has been to the committee on irrigation in the house and a request lias been made to the chairman that the committee be called to meet in the near future however I 1 must say that the chairman seems inclined to hold off on the matter when asked as to whether he thought there would be any opposition from the east to a government aided irrigation enterprise he enid yes I 1 think there will be considerable opposition from tho east to this measure but it will be out of a narrow and selfish spirit the people of the east seem afraid that a project looking to the irrigation of alio arid lands of the west will bring larger competition with the farmers of the east but aliis is a mistake the products of these irrigated lands will not be of such a character as to come into competition with the products of the eastern farmer we hope to be able to get the bill through the present congress without much trouble although we expect to encounter bome opposition from the east for the reason stated
