thorn S ys ablott 1 l the converts to ho cause of the or j denance last night were councilmen powers and carr they having voted against the first reading of the oraf nance councilman carr said that he not satisfied with the rates in tho schedule on bouses with from two to five rooms after councilman brown I 1 had offered an amendment which carried to the effect that a summer kitchen or storage room be not counted as one of the rooms of a house for water rates councilman can tho following amendment that the schedule read 3 for three room house instead of 5 ft for four room house instead of 6 and 3 for five room house instead of 7 councilman abbott spoke against the amendment saying that he thought the rates were reasonably low in the schedule and that the ordinance should pass without any more changes president thomas called councilman parry to the chair and he made an extended talk tn support of the ordinance and against the amendment he said that he believed any change in the schedule which had practically been agreed to by the water company would lead to court litigation the reduction in the water rates as provided for in the schedule said he will figure over while I 1 would like to have seen the rates on two three four and five room houses lower I 1 think the rates have been cut to a reasonably small figure by this schedule we get hydrants free which is a saving here alone of to the city and of course this will cut down the tax levy it you make wholesale changes in this ordinance and tack on amendments you are sure to get into a law suit while if it pass as it now stands it is almost certain to be accepted by the water company I 1 think the amendment should not pass councilman powers expressed his intention of voting for the ordinance he said that he would ilka to see the rates lower but in view of the fact that it would mean expensive litigation he was in favor of taking what he could get let us pass this ordinance eald he and it future councils wish to reduce it still more our action win not molest them in the least councilman carr said that he did not want to be understood as being especially ally against the ordinance but that he would like to see the rates lower councilman parry said he would like to see the rates on small houses lower as was provided for in mr carra amendment but that he thought it impossible to make them any lower without getting into a law suit 1 I am not in favor of putting any riders on the present ordinance said he that will defeatist atIt or that will incur expensive litigation at this point councilman carr withdrew his amendment and the discus eon dosed councilman parry offered an amendment providing for a rate on a aeme I alot of 1 per annum which had ean omitted in the preparation of the ordinance the amendment pass id unanimously councilman brown then moved that the ordinance pass its second reading which was seconded by councilman matter of repairing the around the city hall
