Show IS BOASTED for being it on the junketing trips senators under a misapprehension of what had really occurred grow brathy and assail the speaker the following is from the salt lake tribune of his morning and Is a fair account ot an expression ot senatorial pique over an imaginary wrong inflicted on senatorial rights and prerogatives witnessed in the utah senate yesterday the tribune bays it the ears ot the lion bill glasmann speaker of the utah house ot representatives were burning yesterday he must have known that someone was talking about him undoubtedly bill was the topic of a warm als along about p m and the topic was not dropped tor a matter ot halt an hour A great deal can be eald in that length of time and a great deal was said which bill would not have enjoyed had he been present hor will he enjoy ft more because he was not present it may even strain the entente corrlale cord lale between the senate and house of and the tension at it may be felt oa the excursion to logan today the excursion is at the bottom of ane whole affair it was charged in the senate that dill wanted to be it or the whole thing oa the junket today and in corroboration it was said that he had been it on the boise trip and likewise on the excursion to provo the senate was about ready to adjourn after a light days work when president bvans innocently announced that complaint had been made to speaker glasmann ot people having glae to provo who were not entitled to go and that the speaker in order to prevent a repetition of the circumstance on the logan trip bad caused to toe printed and had sent to the senate tickets which were to be presented before boarding the train then the bomb burst senator smoot rose in wrath and said this is another assumption of authority by the speaker of the house it Is impertinent and it 1 insulting to this senate the committees of the senate and the house had that matter in charge the senate nas acted on the suggestion of its committee the speaker may ibe it but there have been no tickets ordered by the committees of the senate or the house I 1 think arrangements have been made which will be satisfactory to everyone except the sp eaner senator whitney thought there should be an understanding there ought he said to b some curb on an individual taking the bit la his teeth and making himself a committee on printing senator smoot then asked what explanation speaker glasmann had made tor providing the president brans replied that he had understood it to toe because the people of prove had complained that a great many people had accompanied the legislature who were not entitled to do so simply hangers on senator smoots ire was rekindled lie said 1 I want to deny that emphatically and officially the people of provo were disappointed because there were not more people they were prepared to entertain more the railroad people regretted that more did abot go when the speaker says that the people of provo disapproved or that there were any hangers on among the guests of the utah legislature lie simply voices the opinion of the ogden standard and not of this legislature lie has assumed now over the head of the joint committee to issue tickets and run the train to logan it he tries it be will atad that he has up against the biggest stump that he ever struck in his life senator howell here remarked that test there be a suspicion that the people of logan would feel that there were too many guests he wanted to say that they would be glad to welcome as many as the legislature invited and as many as the train could carry at this point in the proceedings president evana announced that a representative of the short une had just brought tickets prepared by the railroad company for distribution this simplified the situation but made it tougher for the hon ani senator love moved that the tickets furnished by william be returned senator whitney asked it they were return tickets iSen aitor smoot asked it the speakers photo appeared on the tickets and finding that it did not went on to say that air glasmann had been 11 II on the idaho trip and that it was time for him to quit smoot moved that me tickets be re to the speaker with the statement that the hily committees had made all necessary arrangements without his interfere I 1 ence slipped in another josh and asked how many tickets are there in the field allison put in that it the glasmann tickets were republican and the smoot democratic he could not vote tor the smoot motion senator whitney then said levity aside the motion should not be worded too harshly and suggested that the speakers personal tickets be returned with the explanation that others had been provided by the railroad senator alder showed the first sympathy aad moved that the whole matter be tabled he thought that the speaker had been sufficiently measured cea tor his zeal by the expressions in the senate smoot however persisted in his motion and declared hat this was the third time that the speaker of the house had assumed authority which belonged to the senate 1 I am now desperately in earnest ie said and the motion even it not dignified Is right continuing he said the very least thing the senate can do is to send him a mild hint and trust that it will be taken to his benefit and the benefit of the legislature allison interjected do you a mild hint would be effective 1 I dont know replied smoot but it there Is a repetition of this assumption ct authority it may result in something more serious than a hint |
