| Show CANADAS RAILROAD FIGHT WHY THE CANADIAN PACIFIC WANTS THE HALIFAX ROAD new york sept 12 A special to the times from montreal says sir wm van home chairman ot the board of directors of abe canadian pa railway co has admitted what has long been an open that the canadian pacific is anxious to establish a fast atlantic steamship service between canada and liverpool and only awaits the promise ot an adequate subsidy the dominion government before putting its plans into execution ec sir william also said that his company would like to abuy out the inter colonval railway from the canadian government and utter establishing its fast steamship lino would run a special canadian pacific train in tEn gland between london and liverpool 1 I could die in peace were sir williams words if I 1 could see a canadian fast atlantic line in connection the canadian pacific railway an accomplished fact my plan would be ito have the fast passenger ships run to quebec and halifax while great cargo ships would carry freight to montreal and st john dihe canadian train would run out of euston station in london to liverpool no expense would be spared to make it the fines train in the world the name of the canadian pacific would appear on all the coaches everything would be done to impress travelers with the idea that ibbey were on a canadian train on every ticket sold we would guarantee connections whether the traveler was bound tor points in canada or the united states or for yokohama hong kong or australia we would guarantee that there would be no delays on the atlantic we would have the fastest steamships afloat ships 0 greater speed than those that run to now york and superior to them in every way the result would be much the same on the atlantic as it has been on the pacific where since the canadian began its line from vancouver to japan we have taken practically the entire passenger business away from the american lines to san francisco before this can be accomplished shed an arrangement must be made by which the canadian pacific trains can meet ships at halifax and the canadian pacific must have such control over the railway between st johns and halifax that we can absolutely guarantee that no delays will take place it the canadian pacific owned the inter colonval there would be no delay whatever the whole line from london to yokohama hong kong and australia would be under one management continuing sir william said toe bo lieveld the people of canada would approve of the purchase of the by the canadian pacific the government railway accounts said sir william are so prepared that the people do not appreciate the large amounts that are continually beans spent on capital account it the government would lease the line to the canadian pacific for a long period of time the canadian pacific would be willing to guarantee that the would cost abe people ot canada nothing in the future that the maximum rates would never be higher than the present rates and that the government should have power to regulate them and reduce them under certain conditions if the canadian pacific had the inter colonval it would undertake to establish a fast atlantic service for a subsidy of that would be superior to anything yet seen the loss now sustained by ahe government of the equipment and operating the inter colonval Is about as great as tho subsidy required for the fast atlantic service and as this loss would be avoided by a lease to the canadian pacific the subsidy would not add to the burdens of the canadian people |
