to mo to have gibeon chosen to act in the capacity ot crowning the queen ot the tabernacle fair it 13 also a great pleasure and I 1 feel that the pleasure 0 witnessing this coronation Is greater for you than tor me this is a country of the grandest liberty where every lady Is a queen in her own right where titles have boon discarded except upon a gala occasion such as this it Is a pleasure to the american people to elect their queen and this lady has been elected in a contest such as americana rove to the exalted honor which now I 1 shall have the pleasure of formally conferring upon her she Is eminently worthy ot the honor hat you have testified by your votes and I 1 now crown her taking ithe crown in hand queen of this fair and to you Is left the confirmation your presence judge then result ot your et forts pride at the honor you have conferred upon me humility at the sense of my own to reign over such a multitude of happy and contented subjects I 1 would that some one whose words are not so weak as mine might frame in fitting utterance my thoughts today I 1 fain would draw tor you in retrospect tro a picture of the years agone of dangers braved and obstacles oer come of strong high souls that knew no tear when urged to butys call but souls endowed with eloquence divine have told that tale and my poor words can add no glory to the heroic ones who walked in gods clear light I 1 might tell you of the natural beauties of our utah home of the majestic mountains that like sleepless sentinels look down upon our peaceful valley but dull indeed must be the soul whose thoughts are not too deep for utterance as he contemplates the etheral canvas that the all wise artist has unrolled before us to most ot us this day must bold a peculiar happiness and significance to those on whom the hand of time rests heavily whose trembling feet have almost trod lifes devious ways it speaks of dreams fulfilled of aspirations pi rations attained of prayers answered to those whose strength is yet their glory who stand in lifes noontide it is a land mark in a halt century of most marvelous advancement to those whose hearts beat high with youths fond fancies it Is a witness for the ones who being dead yet speak in all ages in all lands men have held it fitting to build temples unto the creator whatever the stage of chiv and advancement mans noblest most earnest efforts have been put forth in adoration of the being before whom he bowed with supplication with thanksgiving not boa stingly not with scornful pride but with hearts oer flown with gratitude and love do we point to the completion of our efforts here in this the years most glorious harvest time when nature seems almost to sit with folded hands and rests from labor while man reaps her store we meet to reap the harvest of our hopes to congratulate each other upon the attainment of an end long desired and labored tor through days and years of alternating light and shade surely I 1 do not anticipate failure no faltering now the zealous patient labor of all connected with this great enterprise the generous contributions that have flowed in upon us the magnificent attendance here speak too plainly of an interest that will not admit of failure bountiful harvests and general prosperity call for liberality of the subjects of this realm we enter upon two weeks of recreation and joy upon a session of mirth making and thanksgiving I 1 congratulate you one and all upon the hours of pleasure in store for you and I 1 know that when the end has come and the accounts are balanced we shall have attained the fulfillment of our desires and the people of weber stake will have reason to be proud of the result accomplished I 1 bid all my faithful subjects joy luxuriant pleasure in excess sparkling and exultant during the address there was an absolute hush upon the vast assemblage and at its close ethere was a thunderous applause the beauty of the scene was intoxicating and a moro entrancing picture than that of the queen with her maids of honor empowered embowered ered in a canopy of kaleidoscopic colors lighted up with the brilliancy of electric lights has seldom been seen it was an omen of good fortune which made the queen of the fair so beautiful a woman and one whose grace and carriage so it her for the position THE GRAND MARCH A few moments later the queen appeared escorted by judge and with little lucalle ballantyne and corey train bearers followed by the maids of honor and escorts and a number of other attendants upon the court and all marched to the dancing pavilion where her majesty and judge led the grand march it was a regal affair and afterward the queen received a large number of her loyal and devoted subjects in the tabernacle THE FAIR attractions to enumerate the
