of roses but vitt less thorns after two acara continuous performance for mance the city council of 1898 9 made their farewell appearance as a legislative body and caretaker 0 the affairs of ogden ct they made their exit in a manner and the evening was given up mostly to speeches from the mayor and mayor elect and the old and new councilmen it was a case of ring out the old and ring in the new and as the late hours of the speech making drew 41 nigh councilman jones of the fire committee invited all the old and the new officers to come with him and the fire department gong would ring and all would see an exhibition run and in the excitement of that they would all be glad they were councilmen the session was called to order at and there were present a large number of the city officers as well as the newly elected ones as follows mayor boyle councilmen drowning woolley jonkins shaw drower jones and watson and chiy officers chief davenport of the police department chief riser of the fire department part ment engineer parker sanitary inspector moyes peterson and street foreman sanders of the officers elect there were mayor browning councilmen emmett powers cross parry brown flygare abbott and thomas jones of the secand and carr of the first being the only councilmen elect who were not present there was also chief justice joseph hall now police justice elect and he and thanked them for their kindness and courtesy extending during the past two years they had worked tor the good of ogden the move mc ats ot the council bad been for economy and honesty and for the credit of ogdan city he congratulated the city upon the men who would conduct abo business of tho city for the next years he spoke very highly of the police and fire departments and spoke to some length of the great and good condition of all city affairs c the old officials now go on our way as private citizens and it Is our duty to uphold our successors in their new relation arto the city president browning tor several minutes on the matter of the city affairs and especially of the legal matters now in the courts mayor elect browning said he came not to make a speech he looked for popping of corks and then looked at ted abbott of the fifth who demanded to know for what he was looking at him he thanked tho council for asking him to talk and then congratulated the council and the new council would make as good a record ho knew the newly elected council had a labor and he trusted they would be successful in the work ho had lived in ogden tor 47 years and he was here to stay he
