of the advent to a fitting celebration of the new year reflection on the social status of the past year calls to mind many brilliant events which will make dear old 99 memorable tor some time at least to the readers of these columns we extend a happy gathered around the festive board ol 01 mr and sirs isidore on christmas day was a happy group who greatly enjoyed alth two ot the hostess brothers from new york in whose honor the spread was given the bounteous repast skating and bobbing are sports in which the young folks delight these bracing evenings the merry jingle ot bells mingled with the joyous happy laughter of the young are the the air ana sounds which permeate reveling in the reach the ears of those cheerfulness of the fireside where the sparkling and invigorating weather without finds a reflection in the warmth and brightness within one of the pleasant est affairs of the week was the dance given last night ward educational institute at the second by the Y M M I 1 A the music was furnished by fords orchestra and till a late hour dancing was kept up thursday nigh the first ward gave a bail which was well attended and greatly enjoyed the genuine colored cake walk at the union opera bouse on tuesday evening amusement tor an immense furnished gathering participating in the cake and both before walk were five couples and after the walk spectators were given the use of the floor Last the Y M M I 1 A of the fourth ward gave a dance for the benefit ot the association which proved a decided success and a very pleasant affair wednesday last miss mary A hanson became the wife of A il nord dulst mr and mrs are ogden residents with a largo acquaintance and will be the recipients of much good will the scandinavians numbering almost two hundred spent a most enjoyable time wednesday evening at the third ward amusement hall dancing music and the serving of delicious refreshments caused the jug to pass pleasantly and quickly i RECEPTION AND BANQUET the visit of officers from salt lake to the G A R and W R C orders ot this city on tuesday evening last was the occasion for a very entertaining reception and banquet at the knights of pythias hall the visiting officers who delivered addresses were I 1 M bishop adjutant general of department part ment of utah T K past department commander H P burns commander of mckean post B johnson of mckean post mrs W B short president relief corps and mrs H P burns H C commander presided and M M kalan department made an able speech last on the program was a banquet which proved to bo by no means the least enjoyable part of the evening HUNTER HARMONY CLUB among the performers at the third ward calo given in the opera house last wednesday evening that de servo especial mention were the young ladies of the hunter harmony club by an oversight they were not men in our notice of the m ct but the selections they rendered were delightfully musicale and merited praise besides showing cultivated I 1 BIRTHDAY celebration last monday evening december 18 mr and mrs henry shaw and daughter rosa charmingly entertained a number of their and mr williams friends at their pleasant home no 1516 washington avenue in honor of air williams birthday dancing and ards occupied most of the evening the organ and violin the music mr robert taylor gave the cake walk in a most charming way and also some select songs mrs lilliard Lill lard favored the party with a step lance and song mr bullard also sand a song although in his native tongue it was highly applauded by all at 12 refreshments were served misses alice each member Is urged to be present at this meeting SMITH COOLIDGE wednesday evening gertrude I 1 the pretty accomplished and only daughter of dr andars and Mrs D N smith became the wife of clayton cooledge one of our most highly esteemed young men the scene of the uniting of this popular couple at which rev evans of the baptist church impressively officiated was at tho homo of the brides parents on south washington avenue which bad been elaborately decorated tor the event the first evidence of this decoration was to be found as the entrance to the house was effected where chinese lanterns lighted the guests into the presence of mrs smith the amiable mother of the bride who received the guests in her lady uko manner hero as in every room in the cosy home more especially ally the double parlors cut flowers ferns myrtle ever greena and holly were displayed in many designs revealing the touch of nn artistic hand at half past eight the groom to the strains ot a wedding march executed in a pleasing manner by miss may jenkins entered the parlor and took his place neath the mistletoe bough which was prettily adorned with a wedding bell and the monogram SC where ho received his bride the bride attired in a dainty creation of pure white organdy en train with flowing veil held in place by white carnations and carrying a bouquet of white carnations and terns entered the room leaning on the arm of her father who gave her away the groom looked his best in a full evening dress of conventional black and wore a button hole bouquet of lilies of the valley and hyacinths the marriage knot being tied rev evans spoke in a touching manner of the loveliness and sacredness of marriage and congratulations were then in order then followed the wedding feast which was a veritable little banquet music arid convivial converse were the concluding features of the wedding mrs cool adge then changed to a going away tailor made gown of stone blue and a jaunty hat of pale grey trimmed with rosettes of the same shade and pirk the happy couple left on the outgoing out going train tor salt lake city on a wedding tour of several days when will return to this city to reside the guests catholic club rooms upon this occasion the Hibernia ns ably demonstrated that they are thoroughly versed in the science of entertaining and any future announcement of their acting as entertainers will be received with delight high five was indulged IP the winners after eight games had been played being mrs cahill and mr john maguyre Magu lre in the banquet room were three tables the full length of the room spread with seasonable dainties prepared and served by fryer at the conclusion of the banqueting in response to calls rev P M cushnahan df livered a short address receiving well merited of the early settlers of plain city the young man is much respected by all who know him and has but recently returned from a mission of throe years and eight months to tho hawaiian islands the parlors were beautifully decorated in holly and at an early hour were crowded with friends of abo bride and groom the bride was beautifully attired in white silk with pearl trimmings and exquisite roses many beautiful and costly gifts with hearty congratulations were showered upon tho young couple at eight the guests assembled in a large upper room a repast of surpassing delicacy and gen awaited them after supper a musical pro gramme was pleasingly rendered and much appreciated by all miss fanlo herricks sweet voice was highly entertaining as were also the vocal and instrumental selections of miss loyes and the circumstances which brought it about were bets between secretary of the company and the different crews 0 the factory as to amount of business each could do on a one record after another was broken and finally the factory led every factory in the united states with a run of tons in twenty four hours and the arrangements for the parly and ball were placed in the hands of ho employed emp loyes the expense to be borne by the company above all things the event was a sincere testimonial of the harmony of feeling existing between the employer and tho employed the function opened with a little talking secretary presided and sent the ball rolling with a witty speech president david eccles followed with an historical speech covering the work of the company and then hagbert foreman
