Show the new dominion in these days when fakirs fakiri occupy the stage and dish up a bodge hodge podge ot stuff which they call sterling drama or push along a disgusting conglomeration of 0 farce comedy intended for morbid tastes it ia is not wonderful that the better class ol 01 theatre goers cast incredulous looks upon the appearance of 0 a new play here that cannot be vouched couched for by a successful new york production at one of the leading theatre sand which some prominent manager is willing to stake hie his reputation upon for these reasons one of the ithe most eb charming arming plays presented here in many seasons failed to fill the theater last night though a good sized audience was drawn out clay clement in in the new dominion waa was a revelation to those who have thought that stage attractions actions we were to losing their ch armand from the rise of the curtain on the first act to the closing scene of the play the interest was intense the audience was tilled with varying emotions the ladies shed copious tears durine during the serious situations situa tiona while the men looked stern but all laughed concertedly at the humor of the play it is constructed ted upon lines as old as the bi bills ils for it deals with the passion ot of love but the general atmosphere surrounding it is different to the common run it keeps an audience in genuine sympathy with its every action and is eo so dimply told that each auditor feels a personal interest in tact fact mr clement and his company seemed to exercise an hypnotic spell over the audience and the performance was marked markel with spontaneous ganeous barets of applause the story of the play runs thus A southern gentleman of the old school I 1 has mortgaged hb his inherited estates to secure for his hie daughter the education be thinks a lady should have but is to unable to meet the mortgage or interest the place is to be sold the old man is torn with thoughts of the desecration of the graves of bis hie ancestors and the spoliation of his estates the mortgagee ee it n lowdown low down fellow loves ibe the daughter and agrees to cancel the indebtedness in return for the daughters hand band the father arises in the full strength of bis big dignity and says there is a mortgage upon his lands not upon bis his honor and tells hia his oppressor to di do D bis his worst but a good angel in the form of baron ho hen eaves everything and marries the daughter himself mcclement mr clement as the baron makes of the part one of the best bem dialogue sketches ever done here Q and it was generally eaid said doring during the evening that be must be a german himself but this was dispelled when be stepped before the curtain in response to a ovation und thanked the audience for its marked appreciation and incidentally paid a 2 lowing tribute to the salt lake theater and its historic career in ht argenis argents truly american air mr clement ia 16 mgt fegly a talented actor but as hie his alry apfl naw dominion indicate indicates la alea i bitted aright nr ight the new dominion owes ita its to t apece liar incident mr clement waa was arced tu pl v 6 hermaa character role in a play wah with the sf significant ig cognomen of surf written by oliver logan and being presented by mcgeo 0 rankin several years ago clement looked into the part and thought its possibilities not very great ireat and closed to play it unless ajr 1 11 would let him hita malsa it over M r and P play aay it as he lie pleased thia he consented to and the character ot of baroh was introduced jt it was wag an immenga SUCCESS and clement conceived the idea of writing a play around it and the new dominion ia to the outcome it was bard to gets get a start with it but the merit of the play PIRY was appreciated clate by oy john henry martin the present dinager manager who has hail managan frank mayo in head wilson and other noted actors and slid mr tr clement came rapidly to the front and his pay way now ranks with tha we best beat productions production a of abe stage in recent years year a mr martin has surrounded mr clement with a most excellent company mr clements wife karra kenwyn proved a valuable adjunct in the role of mrs josephine dalaney Dil Di laney anby the company as a whole is splendidly idly balanced well selo selected ced and particularly well fitted for the respective roles of the play |
